      cant fault the abu rocket,
but havent used any one of my penn boat or shore multipliers
      for over ten years
just had penn senator 6/0 boat multiplier seviced after being put away comming up ten years ago and apart from being a little green it had a very easy sevice all gear inside running perfectly( game fishing supplies morpeth, great price and proffesional quick service)
      stiil love my rocket

Horses for courses mate, all depends on what type of fishing you do

I use my abu 6500ct for the beach (lovely and smooth/quiet)
My slosh 20/30\'s on the pier (fast retrieve / good distance)
My penn 535 off the rocks (real workhorse / heavy duty gearing)
And my abu 9000c off the rocks (this beast just reels the snags in!!)

Just to play devil\'s advocate, I\'ve noticed that nobodies mentioned any of the top class fixed spool reels eg Shimano and Shakespeare K2 power play

I have a Penn 525mag and a Abu 6500 Sports Mag....the Penn is a better reel for rough stuff and casting....the abu is OK for estuary or river work.

If I had to choose only one it would be the Penn without a doubt

Never been a fan of ABU\'s for the rough ground with there super slow retrieve, the smaller 6500etc are fine for clean ground but i would use a Penn 525 mag instead for that and a 535 for the rough.had a couple of daiwa slosh\'s over the years and they are not as tough in my opion.
just went nuts over the last couple of weeks and spent a fortune on a couple of Shimano Trinidads but they are the dogs nuts, cracking winching power

Like many others here have said, it\'s horses for courses.
I\'ve never been a great fan of Penn reels. They\'re tough enough, but somehow just don\'t feel right to me, and I\'ve used Abus since the year dot, but then I usually fish the clean beaches south of the Humber and in Wales, using Mag Elites, and might change my mind if I did a bit more rough ground fishing.
However when I do fish the kelp I use the Slosh30. I tried the Penn 535 mag, but got rid after a few trips, and for mixed ground or fishing in weedy conditions with 25lb line straight through stick to my Abu 7000. I\'m now on my second and after over 20 years use it\'s still going strong. Somehow don\'t think the newer Abus will last that long.
                  Cheers

I\'ve just started fishing again, after a twenty year break, the gear has changed so much, no more split cane rods and scarborough reels lol, I,ve got a slosh 30 and (touch wood) haven\'t had any problems.

I have a Penn 535, two 525gs and a 525 Mag can\'t fault any of them. Only time I use my Abu reel is with my G5 supersport as for some strange reason it seems to marry with it better.

hell, might as well have my penneth..

I use a Penn 535GS, took a bit of getting used to, or a slosh30, tends to forgive a savage cast, not a lover of ABUs, penn wud be my choice.

in my eyes it just depends on wat u want. the penn reel will cast good distances and will pull practically anything you hook in struggle free. whereas the abu is a lot better for casting but the retrieve is shocking. i have penns and an abu sports mag and prefer the mags hands down hop this helps
