I also use a mk1 orion (recently rebuilt) and 525 mag xtra with 18lb & shocker for almost all my fishing... I find it to be one of the best rods ive used... Same goes for the reel... No matter what i always go for these as first choice and will have these for as long as i can make them last! I bought the rod off one of my mates for £10 about 6-7 years ago

do you use 30lb to make them ? if you do try 40lb or higher , knot it to a snappy of a decent size clipped to the lead. dont tie knots directly to the lead eye . the wires on leads is often too thick for a knot to form properly and pulls out when you cast. in my opinion anyways

oh and put plenty of spit on the line when drawing your knots tight.

I generally use 70lb rig body and use good strong swivells

The issue isnt knots but the simple fact that if i apply a full force cast the line is simply not strong enough to cope and snaps... Thats why a shock leader is almost always used... I would never use my normal cast with 30lb straight through. It simply isnt safe for anybody around me...

I use 30lb straight thru for rough ground normally

is that casting with lead on the ground or off - if off i can understand line snapping cos you get more of a jerky action going on .

Full pelt it doesnt matter on or off it will snap... Not every cast but a lot!

I have a fairly smooth off the ground cast and makes no diffrrence... Nothing to do with jerking...

Saying this... The 30lb berkley xts that im currently using barely breaks when im trying to so i dont think it will snap so easy... Im fairly sure its under rated

a good rule of thumb for shockleader is 10lb per oz meaning 50lb shocker for 5oz 60 for 6oz i use 80lb shocker and 80 to 100lb rig bodys with 40lb hook lenghts

Yer, if it's owt like the 525 it will be. I would personally spool the 525 up with say 18lb line and 50 shock
