Hi everyone.
I know the arguments about tainting your bait with petrol fumes but i was wondering if anyone uses either the powerhouse or the northstar?
If so what do you think of it and is the northstar worth the extra money?

I used to have the twin mantle, duel fuel lantern, Geoff.
It had a decent light output and was handy for warming up ya pasties on during a cold nights\' fishin\' in January, but I found that the DISadvantages of things like maitenance, fuel, replacement mantles etc. etc, outweighed the 2 ADvantages mentioned above.
Decided to get a rechargable battery powered lantern to replace it a few years back. Still get a good light output and the fully charged battery lasts all night - but not too clever when it comes to serving up hot pasties, though !
Why not use microwave technology ,they\'ve got a light and heat up pasties !
I\'ve just bought a microwave bed ,I had eight hours sleep in twenty minutes last night lol.
The Northstar is great on the beach or pier as a base lamp. Not for rock use though!
They do need looking after, but emptying the fuel out after each use and a good clean once a year should keep it running fine. The electric ignition is great when it\'s windy. Keeps the hands warm on cold nights as well!
The only real problem I\'ve had was caused by a blocked generator, but they are cheap and easy to replace. The light output from the Northstar is fantastic and I\'d recommend it.
Once aquired a Northstar but got shot of it soon after. Great lamps if that is what you like but I think they are a bloody nusiance to other anglers that are fishing near by as you can be blinded by them.
Just to follow what Mike said I would NEVER use any lamp of that sort on rocks as they are down right dangerous. If you try to walk past where the light is shining you could quite easily fall down a hole or gully as everything beyond it is BLACK.

Personally speaking its just more gear to hump around, better off investing in a decent headlamp, also agree with Jim and Mike they are probably very dangerous,I fished with one of my work mates a couple of years ago he spent hours messing on with his Lamp lol,he now has a maintenance free head lamp
Thanks very much guys.
I like the idea of the heat and light, but not the maintanence.
Plus the last thing i need is more kit to lug around if it doesn\'t justify itself.
Once again, cheers everyone.

Hi Geoff, Ill tell yu a story bout coleman lanterns.
When my nephew was about 11, ( Hes 21 now) he hounded me for weeks to take him for an all night session on blyth pier, eventuall y bave in to the ;ittle pleader, and made plans for a friday night session. I had no transport at the time, so my partner agreed to drop us off at 9 on the friday night, and pick us up at 9 am saturday. I took the gear, and a big sheet of black visqueen for a wind break.AND my coleman lantern. To cut a long story short, about 1 am, it got cold. bloody cold. I wasnt too bad, but my nephew began to shiver, I gave him my coat to warm him up a bit, but it wasnt enough. It got to the stage where he was so cold he could hardly talk, and he just wanted to sleep. Frightening signs of hypothermia. not having a mobile at the time, I was up the creek, no one else around.
I made a little tent out of the visqueen , around paul, as close as i could, and left enough room for ventilation, lit the coleman, and put it in with him as a heater, watched him all the time, and he gradually got warm with the heat off the lamp.
i must admit, i was more than a little scared for him.
Ive still got the lamp, but i dont use it. BUT, i dont go for all night sessions on blyth pier any more either.
Bloody hell, good story mate. I\'ve been gibbering on blyth pier myself and i know it\'s not nice.
I\'ve been looking at the second hand ones and for the money i might get one just for the really cold nights and long sessions, especially as i want to fish some matches this winter. Even if it only gets used for a quarter of my sessions it\'ll pay for itself, I\'ve been cold before
Thanks everyone for your advice.

Geoff if you are wanting to fish matches the last thing in the world you need to take is a lamp. Get yourself a good headlight and forget about lanterns as you will not have any time to even look at them while fishing a match mate.

When I take my son fishing in the winter I\'ve got to watch him all the time, normally the tell tale sign is when he goes quiet,\"you had enough\" \"Yes I\'m freezing\",must admit once the cold sets i\'m normally ready for home unless theres fish about, still would\'nt buy a Lantern,I actually like to sit in the dark I find it very peaceful
