I use use 2 different sets of batteries and chargers, first ones a Maha C801D 8-Cell Fast Charger with the Powerex 2700 mAH AA Rechargeable Batteries. Both are a bit expensive at around £90 for the charger and 8 batteries..
I have had this charger and the same set of 8 batteries now for over 4 years, the charger and batteries have never let me down. They can be bought at..

DAB Radios, Internet Radios, Amateur Radio, Scanners and CB - Nevada Radio

The second set up I use is the same charger but with some HR-3UTGB-4BP sanyo eneloops 2000 mAh which are the latest generation Eneloops out today and are very low self-discharge. These Eneloops can be charged Up to 1800 charging cycles and can hold Up to 90% of charge remaining after 1 year of storage..and Up to 70% of charge remaining
after 5 years fo storage.. they can be bought from here with a Sanyo charger..

7dayshop.com and get their own. Think they do 2900 mAh now. Use them in my headlamp and all around the house and they're spot on.

Roybert is spot on here, sanyo enelope are the best of the bunch. I never used the powerex they may well be as good but cannot comment. I have used the sanyo batteries they were recommended to me by the guys in a model shop in north shields (and they did not even stock them so they lost a sale) they used to be sold in the photography department of asda I paid 11 quid for 4. I would recommend getting one of the smart chargers that have the battery conditioning recycle feature then you don't need to completely discharge them before recharging. Lidle used to do a German made one (Tronic was the make) for around ten quid.

EC500 - Ansmann Global Line Intelligent Battery Charger Set with 4 x 2700mAh NiMH batteries

That looks spot on for the price, anyone used that?

got a intelligent charger from class olson in the toon and its the best bit o kit ive bought regarding batteries.
you can discharge them so you dont knack the memory and you cant overcharge them as it swiches each one off when fully charged, was getting one sesh fishing with my princeton apex now im getting 2 plus, good value for little over 20 quid imho
