  • Hythe national civil service finals

Well we headed off full of optimism and a feeling that fishing was going to be unbelievable (as you do) reports suggested whiting and dabs were in big numbers and with a 6 hr match in the mix there could be some big bags. Not to mention Scottish internationals and some top southern match anglers kicking about we still felt confident. If you have fished the massively steep shingle beaches before you will know from high water down it is like descending a cliff, appropriate point later !! Ha ha, anyway 11 regions with the top 3 anglers from each region set out fishing, as the horn went, nerves were going watching avidly for a bite, I heart of a couple of fish on first cast not a sniff for me. Then the second cast not a sniff third cast rod bouncing was a Yorkshire guy pulling me in ;-( then dab not blanked yipheee.. I went on to catch only 3 dabs, however in the grand scale of things it was good going as prob 60-70% blanked!! Unreal given previous tides. I ended finishing 3rd in my zone with Codman finishing 6th in his zone and the other member blanking but only approx 3 caught in his zone. As a team we finished 6th beating local rivals Yorkshire and Scotland.

Anyway the steep beaches point the winner Iain graham Scotland international who is also a tornament caster ended up with 19 fish from the French shore line and at one point i looked at the other zone and he was standing at the top of the shingle beach with people 100 yards down the beach firing lead further than they were awesome to watch and well deserved win!!

    Great time

Fished it last Tuesday night in the Police Nationals. Fished quite well, I was on the zone just west of the Twiss Groyne. Had whiting and dab to size with 9 under (1 pointers). The lads further west in the low number had just under 70 fish including undersize in a 5 hour match. Those around me only had 2 or 3. Blackrat on here won the zone. Waiting for full results.

Fished the Deal area on day 2, about 4th in my zone but nearly got taken out to sea walking back from peg 1, the longest walk in massive winds. Lots of blanks that day but the water had colour around our section.

Biggest fish came in the night match, 6lb cod. Took a whiting that had thrown the hook out through it's gills.

PS the legs are about recovered from the shingle, liver is somewhat behind from three days on the drink

No singing at all except supporting the juke box haha. Mind you I don't do Tom Jones.

Yeah can be good Joe. Not quite as prolific this year but decent fishing anyway. You been doing much?

I have fished a couple of comps down there with Blackrat and Peter. This year gave it a miss. My arthritic knee finds them shingle beaches hard work especially runing up and down whitey bashing on the night matches and getting your scorecard marked up.
The day time matches are also hard work. Secret is distance casting. Thought if i went back of getting 16 ft rod fixed spool and braid set up. Whiteys are there but in deep water.

                Mick.

Sounds like you had a good result I watched a couple of people in the evening and they were pulling triple shots in within 5 mins when the water is clear I guess distance is an advantage as our results showed great social and I was as rough as a snipers elbow driving 400 + miles Bridlington this weekend inter-regional against Yorkshire who will be after revenge when we won by a country mile at pottery bank last year !!!

Good luck at Brid. Our regionals early next year probably at Sandsend, hate the place!
