  • Bass fishing

    Hi lads,

I’m off on a fishing trip next week and there's a few well known bass spots in/around our caravan. Bass is never something I’ve purposely targeted using bait but I’m planning to give it a serious bash this time.

I’ll be fishing bait (lug I’m told is best) on a shingle/small stones beach

    Can anyone advice me on;
I’m assuming 2/0 hooks will be weapon of choice?
    Single hook?
    length of trace?
bites - strike or "lift" into bite or...something else?

    Any advice much appreciated

Both Rag and Lug work, I prefer Lug, Good quality sharp as possible 4.0 hooks and at least 1 yard hook length. If the water is clear stick a bright floating bead just above the bait. Don't get hung up on fishing close in, try all distances and move about if you have no takes as they can be 20 yards away and you would never know. I find bigger tides and well into darkness is best for me.

      Good Luck.

As Mick said long hook lengths if the waters clean fish in the dark or first light and hopefully weathers cloudy, prefer 3/0 with peeler or rag 2nd choice.

Reg - I'm off for my annual trip to Stranraer. I'll be going to the usual spots around there for bass weather pending; New England Bay, Drummore, caravans off Sandhead.

Thanks for advice on the hooks and lengths - I thought a 4/0 would be way too big for a bass! I'll probably go in the middle with 3/0s. I plan to alter my distances a lot, again I'm reliably told they can be <20 yards off sometimes

I'll be fishing in the dark at low water, well ideally 2 up & down.

it seems this forum is slowly dying

              Already dead isn't it?

Snatcher has a caravan at Clashwhannon (or however its spelt...) in Drummore -one of the people I've had advice from in recent years. Might catch him if he's resident when I'm there.

I've got enough info now, just need the weather to play ball and the general MoG area doesn't favour often...

Had them on either worm close n far . Bass don't have small mouths so don't worry about the hook size. Length of trace would depend on how rough the condition is

                  Bass ,best bait

I have never scored with lug when bottom fishing for bass. Found rag to be more productive. Worth putting a silver lure on the bottom and you might attract a fish when pulling in.
                  Best of luck.
