as far as i know they now frequent the wrecks. Funny how when they shut the fish quay outlet, Whitley Pipe and Rocky Island pipes down the coalies disappeared. After that the only time i encountered any decent coalies was out in the baot about a mile off.Alan

I remeber you used to get some massive bags from the sunderland piers from august onwards, but not now. But for all the quantities, a 2lb fish was always a good one.
I was just thinking about it because you never hear of many good Coalfish over say 5lb caught, from the boats, and more especially the shore. From what I\'ve read, the big winter fish caught on the wrecks in the channel fight even better than Pollack.Davy

We\'ve had them around 5lb from the wrecks Davy ( Dirty wreck and Adastra being favourites for them ) but now where near double figures . the same could be said for big Bass to . Double figure coalie and Bass figure on the southern wrecks but not on ours . Never worked that one out like ?????

Even I\'ve had some good sized coalfish when I\'ve been out with Dave.
Mind you, \"good sized\" to me is anything over 3lb.....hahahaha.
Got to admit, I do like the look of the bigger coalfish.......they taste pretty good, too (imo).......why is it that, more often than not, even the good sized fish aren\'t kept?

Thanks Mick for dropping me in it.
You know that I\'d never admit to catching coalies. I was fishing for the odd mackerel that was swimming with them (thats my story and I\'m sticking to it).

Used to be plenty up the south side of the South Crab Hill (by the sewer pipe) or up the gut by **** Hill at Sharpness (by the sewer pipe) In fact anywhere there was outflow there were poodlers. As Al said the demise of the pipes meant the disappearance of the fish (codling as well, by and large)
