Black lug

I have heard a few reports of people using this bait but when I buy lugworm from Hendon it's usually just a brownish colour.
Is the black a different bait? or just prepared a different way?
I got some "runnydown" once and that was very dark but preserved in some way.
Is it worth sourcing black lug for the cod season ? or is the brown fresh stuff just as good.

2 different "breeds" of worm from the same family mate. Common blow lug are generally a brownish colour but ya do get the odd 1 thats black as it's been living in seacoal.
Black lug are 6 - 8inches long, sometimes bigger and live in very deep burrows that go straight down in the sand. These are what you buy frozen in tackle shops.

blacklug or runnydown are just a bigger species from blow lugworm. they live in deep burrows that go straight down instead of u shape. People also call them yellowtails.

yellowtails are the worms with guts still inside them good winter bait for cod.

blacklug are yellowtails with the guts squeezed out get called different names such as runnydown blacklug slappers. people squeeze guts out as they can then be frozen down for winter. they pack loads of scent even with no guts in.

fresh can outfish frozen but frozen can outfish fresh m8 just depends on venue etc. i always make sure i hve a decent stock of frozen in the winter.

forgot to mention blacklug runnydown etc can be frozen or salted and kept in fridge or salted then frozen people use different methods. you can also salt blowlug and keep in fridge or freeze them people down south or over west coast do this a lot and meant to be ok for cod. but blacklug all the way for me.
