  • Camels Island Commotion

So there I am fishing of the back of Camels island at Marsden, minding my own Business, not much happening. All the while I can here this commotion coming from the top of the Leas, near the Grotto car park. Sirens from an ambulance then a Police car. So I carry on fishing minding my own business. After a while and the cold setting in I decide to head up to see what all the commotion is about as its started to build. I wade back across from the island and head up top to find 2 policeman and the coastguard searching over the cliff edge. Being a good Citizen I walk up behind them and enquire about what there searching for:

    Me: "can I help you?"
Pc: " is he with you, is that your mate?"
Me: "who?, no I'm on my own"
Meanwhile the coastguard drives up also....
PC: "are you not with that lad on the island?"
Me: "I am the lad on the island!"
PC: "how did you get back up here!"
Me :"waded back across and walked up that path"
PC: (looking at my fishing rod, waders and floatation vest and speaks into his radio) "roger 10/4 call of the engines, it's a fisherman, he's safe and sound and here with me!"

Turns out some cyclist had been riding along the coast and phoned the police saying "someone is stranded on the island"!

Police, coastguard and fire engine all called to rescue me from my perfectly safe situation!

Anyway, didn't catch anything, so that's my Lures and light gear going away for the Winter. Time to dust off the multi's, get the heavy gear out. Find my wooly hat and get the floaty out.

It's time to get smelly, cold and wet again!

Don't know who was more embarrassed, me or the Policeman. Anyway they were dead canny and we had a little joke about it.

Ivan, I try to limit myself to one emergency call-out a year! I pay enough bloody tax lol

I was actually thinking about what would have happened if I'd stayed on there! I'm picturing helicopters, boats and a slot on Look North!

Same happened last winter while i was fishing the shelves, 2 lads where fishing the side of camels and they must have caught a fish as they started to take photographs of it, obviously the flash was going off, 10 mins later the place was crawling with police and coastgaurds, i climbed up to tell them it was fishermen and they had been there for hours but they said they had to be sure, so one goes down to the bottom of the path and starts shouting over to them, after a few yells of "are you ok over there", the reply came back "of course we are, were just effing fishing", gave me a little chuckle.

Makes me wonder why the cyclist never shouted over. That would`ve stopped all the confusion
