  • Ragworm

Walking to work this morning past Cardwell Bay.

It got me reminiscing of past days digging for rag and lug out there. Used to be absolutely stuffed with worms. I never see anyone digging these days. I wondered if it's because there are no worms left, or because there are no fish left in the Clyde? So I looked a bit closer and there were still plenty of worm tracks.

It's ironic how down your way people are secretive about good worm beaches and here is one right on my doorstep that no one digs on. Maybe I will ask Lynn if she fancies trying to dig some worms just before we come down next month. My back couldn't cope with the physical aspect of digging, but I could supervise her.

Duncan, about 3 years ago we were going to Tighnabruaich for a weekend. I asked Lynn if she had a garden fork so that we could dig worms. She said she did. She picked me up and about 3 miles from our cottage we stopped at a beach I knew and got out the car and put on our wellies. I asked her where the fork was. This is what she took out the boot.

Needless to say, it was Mackerel for bait all weekend.

Still slag her about that one

having origanally born in grreenock and whre most of my relatives live, and been shown some of the bait beds round the greenock area and having dug there several times when visiting relations a never had to take bait up there as a could dig it fresh daily , it used to be a cracking place for lug worm never seen any rag there as most of the locals used to dig at the Esplanade for their rag
and possibly the biggest ragworm iv'e have ever seen came from there than any other place i know of, in fact regular saw worms to about 3' plus coming from the Esplanade also there is a few other cracking bait beds that the locals used to dig, A favorite one was where you could litterally fill a 2 gallon bucket in a bout half an hour with ragworm, sometimes i wish we had those beds here , but then again they probably be destroyed by greedy individuals
whree exacl;ty do you live up there, you probably know some of my relations as there are bloody loads of them loll

Mate, now you come to mention it, I do remember that Cardwell Bay was best for Lugworm and the Esplanade was where the big Ragworm came from.

I am originally from Gourock, my grand parents ran the pub called Cleat's Bar there.

When I was a boy, in the 70's/80's I remember that fishing clubs from the North East came regularly to the Clyde to catch the big Cod that were prevalent in those days.

It is ironic that 30 years later, I have to come to the NE to try and catch Cod, because the Clyde has been trawled into extinction!
