Snags at St Peter's

I was along at St Peter's Basin for a couple of hours the other day, in in front of the houses at The Ropery.

As the title says, I had some snag problems!

I was using a 4oz weight casting about 1/3 rd of the rivers width. Every time there was a current pulling me along (bridge-wards) and I was getting snagged on something about 8 feet out.

Lost two rigs that day, how can I avoid this?

current can be bad round there at times! further along
at the green door(next to navy facility) the currents
really bad but you catch fish!
i never go any lighter than a 5oz gripper lead in the tyne but use
6oz for general tyne fishing i think the current was pulling you there
mate but if it wasnt just move 10-15ft either side of
where your fishing!

Monster tides at the moment as we head in to the Autumn Equinox. 4oz in the river is a bit light at the best of times but on these tides you will never hold bottom.

Even with 6oz I'd be walking well uptide then letting a lot of slack line out after casting in an effort to get the lead to hold in the tide.

With the big tides at the moment the river will be pulling a lot 6oz grips are a must

When the tides are big like at the minute I think it helps to fish the wider parts of the river. Deffo not as much drag. But with the size of them ATM its always gana be hard holding bottom.

Always snag close in on strong tide heavier weight n quick retrieve with rod high you b fine fished there 3 days last week n lost no gear
