  • The old breakers yard at loch Ryan

I'm looking for as much info on this place as i can get, regarding congers if anyone has any info, looking to fish it from a kayak so the state of the pier is irrelevant.
    Cheers Si.

Hi there, I fished the area a lot as a teen And had mixed success with congers, my best was 24lb 8 oz from the back of the church (its really just a small graveyard)just to the left of the picnic area south of the new stena development. (old house point)
That place is useless now as its bizarrely clean ground nowadays and a far cry from the lochryan open I won with wrasse in my bag from a nearby peg years ago.

The whole stretch from old house to the lighthouse point Used to be heaving with congers but sadly the algal bloom wiped out the lot, heartbreaking scenes seeing so many big beasts washed up dead in the shoreline, the loch hasn't really recovered since,

However the pier seems to have done ok and the BIG congers are still there, I've lost massive fish off here due to landing nets etc just not being up to the job, I've even seen grown men being held onto when engaged with a fight with the huge beasts Down there. It is really rough ground though and we have tried in recent years to fish it with the boat, we have landed a few to twelve and lost eels we simply couldn't budge after a few seconds tug of war the bottom is so bad nowadays that getting a plain lead back let alone a big conger is an achievement as so much debris is accumulating by the day as the old pier crumbles away.

The bit we fish is about half way up on the village side

        Here

On small tides there is very little drift even at mid tide so no need to anchor up as you will probably struggle
        To get it back anyway

Only thing to watch is te boats which can be hidden by the pier nd the big troughs can take you by surprise Nd suck you towards the pier so be vigilant.

        Mackerel best bait by far.

Hope this helps and good luck,
