There are 2 types,Lesser and Greater.we mostly get the Lesser around here.
Lesser weever - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I,v been stung a few times by them over the years.
The last time i was trying to be a good lad and shake one off a spinner when it got me in the thumb.
The pain was like hitting the thumb with a hammer and a lesser pain up to my shoulder.
If you have any hot drinks with you, pour it over the area and it eases the pain.
After a week the thumb went black and all the skin peeled off it.

That would probably have been a greater weaver they grow much bigger than the lesser weavers we see. They also have a slimmer shape. I remember reading somewhere that their sting is less savage than the lesser weaver.

I saw one that was over a foot long when I was snorkelling with my camera in the Med. It was lying on the sand in about 5 feet of water and coming up like a polaris missile to ambush sand-eels that were swimming over it in shoals.

When it saw me approaching the front dorsal stood up as a threat.

If I can find the photo I took I'll scan the neg and put it up.

I got stung by a weaver as a kid and had to go to casualty. Finger was throbbing bad.

Caught one the other day. Had been catching small billet/pollock/blennies all day. For some reason I grabbed my towel, don't know why. Hadnt with any of the others. Didn't even think it was a weaver, just another double shot of billet. Soo clad I did. Nasty little thing had its spikes sticking out as I used my towel. Lucky escape!

Will be using my towel for all fish from now on. Should be anyhow really. Let off and lesson learned
