I've got a blue elite that's spool rims are rubbing on the cage slightly when you apply pressure onto the spool with yer thumb, you can actually hear the rubbing noise. Stripped it down and everything looks fine apart from the abrasive marks on the plastic spool caused by the rubbing. The reels only 9 months old and chucks like a dream and no problem hauling stuff in so I can live with it no bother. I'm just curious as to whether anyone else has had this problem as the reels got an identical twin used the same amount of times that hasn't got the problem.
I'd be very grateful for any opinions.
    Cheers

Plastic spool? Thought they were metal? :s

sounds like the cage is slightly warped, or the spindle isn't true - check the shims and centre the spool. but its still usable. if you replace, try a one piece cage! hope this helps

Have you tried slacking the left side break so the spool has play on it then center it with the right hand side knob so its centered to 0. If it still catches try and swap the spools and the spool spindle over if it catches still then it's the cage if it doesnt then it's the spool or the spindle.

I had one years ago that was great until I dropped it once. The cage must have twisted slightly, no matter what I did it was never the same. Great reels but they don't like being knocked.
Love them though, I've still got 2 blue Elites

Yer mate, tried adjusting the spool alignment but on difference.
I was also thinking of interchanging parts to try and pinpoint the cause, just thought I'd see if there were any common problems first so thanks for the advice. Surely the cage, spool or spindle can't be faulty as the reels never had any grief

On these ABU,s the spool revolves on a fixed spindle held at both end side plates.
The problem you describe could be caused by the following...

A bent spindle, remove the spindle and lay it on a good flat surface,a piece of glass would do.
slowly roll the spindle on the glass and if you have a vernier measure the deflection of the spindle.
The next thing to look at is there any play in the end plate housings, remove the spool then reassemble the reel without the spool so you only have the spindle present, with finger and thumb try to move the spindle within the reel, there should be no movement at all.
Next thing reassemble the reel with the spool fitted then slacken off the three screws holding the non-drive end plate and see if you can move the end plate slightly forward towards where the rod would be positioned.
After market cages can cause you this problem with slight misalignment of the end plate locations, refit the original cage to prove this.

If you still have the problem I will have a look at it for you.

                          Cage it is

There had to be something wrong like, I was messing about with the pair of them last night and the good one had a spin time of 3 min and the grinder 1 min so tonight I started to interchange parts carefully so as not to get them mixed up, followed suggestions and started with the spindle, then spool assembly followed by end plates but no difference so cage only and that's the problem. I can't believe it, it's 9 months old, looks brand new and never had any grief apart from when the rod slipped one day and it hit the deck slowly putting a tiny chip in one of the plates that was replaced. I had a look at them qtc cages today and their around a ton so will probably give pete coogan a ring tomorrow and just replace with new standard cage.
Anyway thanks for all your replies and advice and thanks to you Harry for that offer, much appreciated.
                          Cheers
