They will struggle in rough ground. An M427, Zeteque or Lt bullet would be better rods for the NE coast and heavier ground. The HST is a rod more suited to beach, light mixed ground and also requires a fairly decent casting technique to get the best out of it.

You don't need mega stiff pokers for heavy ground. I use an m4 evo and its fine in fact I was just up seahouses yesterday with it.

I use the m427 su my other choice would be the zeteque txl or dymic lt bullet for the rough stuff. Anything below these in zippy range not really a rough ground rod.

However if you talking about what you can get away with one lad uses a team daiwa supercast up st Abbas and has landed doubles on it.

I've had an HST and they are too soft for otg casting imo.
If you pendulum cast tho it could be the rod for you!
I swapped mine for a tip tornado sport which suits me better!
            Stay safe!
            Enjoy your fishing!

I use my son's m4 evo nice and easy to cast and easy on the back his su will pull the plug out great for pulling fish out of the kelp but beware not for the slightly built he's big enough to cast it out of sight had RTA Jupiter's fireblades thats why I walk with a limp buy a rod you can manage unless you are dropping a bait over a rock edge and its going to be a strike and wind job I use a bass rod over rough gound at Mog you win some you lose some
