  • Mackerel a bit scarce today

Well looking at the forecast tomorrow and with our summer school starting on Monday, today was the last chance for a mackerel session for a week or two.

First we took a trip to Cash Generators to try and replace the rods we had stolen. Not much decent on offer, but hiding at the back of the rack was a 9ft spinning rod, second hand, but I'm sure it hadn't ever been used and a steal at a tenner. So we decided to just share one rod and off we went.

Lovely and sunny as we set off to our usual haunt.

Taken from Lyle hill before heading for the ferry.

Within the hour, clouds had developed. Grr.

Anyway, along with our "new" Shimano(which the thieves didnt get), we started fishing. It's the first time we have had a decent quality fixed spool reel and what a difference, so smooth. Lynn had first dibs and fished for about half and hour without success. After that, she asked me to cast for her, as her efforts are not the best. I was very impressed with the cheap rod, very whippy and, as I said, a lovely smooth reel. I estimate I added 15 yards to what I had been casting with the old stuff. Eventually Lynn managed to foul hook a Mackerel, but then nothing for an hour.............Did I say we were sharing the rod! Eventually I got a go for about 15 mins, but nothing. We had two previous sessions in June which were much better?

Lynn by now is back on the rod and eventually gets a couple of properly hooked mackerel. Finally I got a proper go and after about 20 mins I got 3 in three casts, but it went quiet again. After lunch we managed another 5 but it was very patchy.

So not great, but fish all the same. Met a couple from the NE who were staying at a caravan at Ardentinny. Had a nice chat. Mind you the guy was asking about how the Clyde fishes............I told him how poor it was. He was surprised as he said that "the guy in the tackle shop in Dunnon told us a young lad caught a 26lb cod off the rocks last week, just in front of the caravan park."

Ah the naiviety of the holidaymaker Hope he didn't buy a load of cod tackle!

Note to self............I need to buy another rod if I ever want to fish again !

Another note to self...............Learn to post in the correct section!

      True Duncan!

Actually 3 were the biggest we have seen all summer, the others decent enough. Just had a couple for tea. Another 2 for brekkie and make the rest into pate. Mmm

It's a great spot to fish. Can get a bit busy around early afternoon, but with families, no ruffians so all good.

That would make a nice change mate. Do you float fish also for the mackerel?

Never tried it. I did try float fishing for mullet on our last trip to Blairmore, but they just drove me mad by eating all the ground bait and swimming right past the bait with the hook!! The cottage in my picture, is at the end of the pier and availabe to rent, plus a caravan park 3 miles up the road. Wonderful area and scenery..................if you get the weather !
