    As part of National Fishing Month the North East Region of the Angling Trust are holding two crab catching competitions this year for youngsters.
    The first is on Sunday 29th. of July fishing 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.on the River Wear. Entry is free. There are two age groups up to 12 years and from 13 to 17 years. There are prizes for the winners of each group. No rods, reels or hooks are allowed. Handlines only, these and bait will be supplied. Competitors are asked to bring a container to keep the crabs in. Register next to the Glass Centre Sunderland from 1 p.m. on the day.
    The other competition is being held on the River Tyne at Gateshead on Sunday 12th. of August fishing 12 noon to 2 p.m. Register next to the Baltic Art Galleries from 11 a.m. Rules as above.
    Under 12s. must be accompanied by an adult.
    On Sunday 26th. of August there will be an open boat competition. This is a heaviest single fish match and is sponsored by Sports and Leisure Blyth and McDermotts Ashington. The event is open to all boats charter, pleasure and kayaks. Entry is £10 all classes. Boats may fish from any port they wish but must weigh in at the Royal Quays Marina North Shields. Fishing is from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. weigh in closes 5-30 p.m.
    There are two boat classes up to 20 foot and over 20 foot with a special prize for the heaviest fish from a kayak. The first three heaviest fish in the two boat classes will receive a percentage of the entry fees, after those there will be prizes to be won. One competitor one prize.
