  • why do boats need to come so close?/

Does anyone else find it ignorant that boats come so close to your lines when the river is god knows how wide and not a boat in site maybe i should stop waiting for them to get past before i cast

I'm not a boat owner and I dont believe any boat owners deliberately go over a shore anglers line. The boat owner certainly dosent want line wrapping around his propeller and for this reason alone a boat will avoid line. In the river there is navigational channels unlike a road there's no white lines running down the centre of the river that you would see. Any vessel leaving that is heading down and towards the sea would be over to the South bank and vessels heading up river would be on the North bank. A small boat has to give way to the large commercial shipping and in this case the smaller boat would come closer than normal to the bank. If fishing from either the South or North banks of the river you should be aware of any vessels and there movements.Dont be a fool and decide to cast out when a boat is approaching your lead could cause serious damage to the boat or the person/s onboard.

i understang about giving way but when there is no boat in site why come so close if he does not want damage to his boat keep clear when possible and if i dint hold my rod what about the damage caused to a 400 pound rod and 200 pound reel some boats do move out the way and i always say thanks but some make u want to cast at them

It's like big sid said, it's down to navigation. Just because there's no one on a dual carriageway you wouldn't swap to the other carriageway in a car. Drop your line or reel in and wait til it's clear is the simplest thing.

Many factors come into it, me being a boat owner and pass the walkway 3 times a week, you need to keep right regardless if any other boats around, sometimes you steer around floating wood etc but i cant see any boats getting closer than 50 yards at the walkway as they would need to stree back out to avoid the shallow rocks after the pilot jetty and the old wooden jetty for that matter.

Jet ski's are something else mind, not everyone but i have seen some bloody stupid stunts done by them..the best being some buzzing my boat so he could jump the wake then falling off not more than 15 yards right infront om me.

I have ran over someones line once and TBH it was impossible to miss it as people fish casting into the entrance of the marina...i spotted it and the crew guided it over the boat and away with out harm..if anyone cast at me on purpose i would be pulling up and having a word or ringing in a favour as i work hard for my boat and its the price of a good car not to have it damaged on purpose.

If in doubt point your rod tip down to the water and give out a shout to the boat drive, we cant always see the lines and may have just not seen you at all...as stated above we all fisherman no one wants to cause anyone to have a bad day or lose money on repairs etc

p.s any regular offenders then you can contact the port of Tyne with the name of the boat or jet ski colour etc.

              Safe fishing

How can you complain about boats on the river when it's a shipping lane???
I cant play kerbsy on the a19 as the wally's in the cars come too close lol.
Just keep an eye out for boats, pretty simple really.
