im thinking of booking a caravan for a few days either humberside or west coast.im looking for advice on tackle,i have 2 x 13ft 5lb test spod rods that i use in the summer along with shimano spod reels, they chuck 4 to 5 oz leads miles, the drag on the reels is great .would these be ok for smooth hound fishing.i used to carp fish all the time and have caught 20lb plus carp on 2.5 lb test rods .ive never fished for the hounds but have read up loads of info on it and know you should have the drag slackend off or risk loosing your rods.ive got a six-seven ounce beach rod but would rather fish the 2 spod rods.any advice would be great

My mate is down bognor regis at the minute and he rang me the other day ti tell me he has had 2 smooth hounds and lost a whopper he has a greys apollo extreme 140 the heaviest rod they do and he said the fight from the fish is amazing they had his rod bent right over literally tip facing the water and rod straight up
If i was you i wouldnt be using heavy carp rods id be using heavy sea fishing gear there supose to be the best fighting summer fish in our waters

yeah been told the fight hard, the spod rods im using chuck 7oz spods so they are tough rods, people use them for cat fish.guess id have to play the fish rather than pump it in cod style.they catch cat fish over 50-60lb on spod rods

Theres no reason why you cant try it mind yes you need good crab must be fresh and yes i wouldnt pump them in you will have to actually play the fish in to your feet.
You know you have a good fish on when your line actually swims side to side in the water

Any rod will land a smoothhound! They aren't exactly big. They tend to come in fairly easily and its only when you get them in the shallows that they can run a little. If you using light line just back the drag off slightly and you will be fine.

One problem you might have is getting out far enough. Sometimes they are close other times they can be at extreme range. Obviously to get the distance you may need a standard beach rod and the associated grip leads to hold the bottom.

the rods are the fox horizon xt 13ft spod rods the carp lads are chucking spods 200 yards with them, not that i can do that mind but they do throw a 4/5 oz lead a long way.the tip is quit soft and they are made so you can compress them with 4/5 oz spods.probs get a shock if i hook one mind--lol

There are 2.35 carp yards to 1 imperial yard On the south coast they fish for big hounds on rods like TT Ultralite's so I'd imagine your rods would be fine (afraid I'm not really up to speed with coarse gear!)
