It doesn't matter what type of fishing it is or where in the world you're fishing, fishing is easy RIGHT BAIT, RIGHT PLACE, RIGHT TIME put all these three factors in your favour you will consistantly get good results, just get one of those three factors wrong you'll catch little. Sure you can catch a lucky fish against the odds but not on a consistent basis. I heard a saying many years ago and it is so true 90% OF THE FISH ARE CAUGHT BY 10% OF THE ANGLERS THE OTHER 10% ARE CAUGHT BY THE OTHER 90% OF ANGLERS.

experience is king imo, yes good bait is important but you can have the best bait in the world but if your putting it in the wrong place you'll likely go home with an empty fish bag
Skill, knowledge, experience.... Add it all together in the right way and you can certainly make yourself more lucky than the guy next To you who doesn't have these in his armoury. Stack the deck in your favour but you can only catch what is there on any given day. 10% luck, 90% everything else lol

When I joined a club years a go the top lad beat me 20 times out of 21. I asked other anglers in the club how he was doing this. The answers I got where he uses a big rod , as a 12ft drop to is lead ,does a funny cast , uses big worms , is a jammy sod, must I go on. Well I decided to find out for my self what this bloke was doing. At the weekend we had a match, fishing at hilston on the Holderness coast. On the Friday I decided to go to hilston for a look round, just for something to do. Guess who I bumped into , yep , this top lad in the club. It dawned on me why he was there, looking at the beach for the best places to fish. Now ill shorten the story up. Over the next few months bit by bit I find out what this bloke was doing. He was working hard at is angling. I started to copy this lad , my catches improved . So would say you still need luck but you need skill by a long stroke .
Going off some replies I might as well wrap in now.ha ha. This winter will only be my 3rd season. I haven't had a cod over 3lb so far and could probably count them all if I took me socks off.
I don't have time to collect my own bait due to work and doing stuff. Plus keeping it. I don't fish with anyone experienced who can put me on fish and I started a book to keep a log of catches but only had one session that produced fish since.
So to answer the original question. For me it's 90% luck and a little bit knowledge.
Not a truer phrase spoken - Its all about whats on yer hook - as the fish certainly divun know what gear you are using - However the fish have to be there in the first place.
On average experience will come out on top but there is also a element of luck a few years ago I was fishing with plugs and spinners in Luce bay a guy turned up with his son asked for advice he had just brought him a rod and reel I give him a spinner told him to cast to the side of a reef he was straight into a decent bass I caught nil lol
