Main line/shock leader ties to a lead link (usually shaped like a small hook with a eye at the top) and a weaker length of line goes from the lead link to the lead.
The lead sits on the link hook during the cast and slips off it when the rig hits the water or the sea bed, 'deploying' the lead on its weaker length of like, aka "rotten bottom".
If you aren't casting (boat fishing for example) you don't need a lead link - you can go mainline to swivel then tie a weaker length of line to the other end of the swivel for the lead.
Or try billyturbot's suggestion - don't let the bottom fall out of your world, let the world fall out of your...

Breakaway do a rotten bottom link as well you don't have to use a weaker length of line it works like a splash down when it hits the water the lead slips down the link and if you need to put excessive pressure to pull the line in the lead will release the Gemini are a bit more of a faff on but I prefer them to the breakaway

Rotten Bottom
You must be doing something wrong Stevie, put the rotten bottom on your leadlink then attach your sinker to the leadlink with say 12lb line, the eye on the lead is then hooked over the rotten bottom, when the lead hits the sea bed the lead comes off the rotten bottom leaving the lead attached by the
weak 12lb line which is then easy to snap.
Hope this is easier to understand than to explain
Get your rotten bottoms off ebay just over £2 for 25.
Cheers Ian
