    Have a read of this.....

    Court threat to dock fishermen
DOZENS of fishermen face being hauled before the courts for casting their lines on Sunderland\'s docks, under tough new powers handed to port bosses.
The Echo has learnt that files on more than 40 people who have trespassed on the Hendon seafront are in the hands of city solicitors who are deciding what action to take.

The move comes after two near-tragedies on the docks in February when trespassing fishermen had falls – one was saved by a passing boat and the other suffered a fractured skull.

While by-laws have restricted access to the docks for years, the area has remained a popular spot for fishermen.

But under international terrorism laws, new offences have been created for anyone found trespassing on restricted Port of Sunderland land.

As well as risking their lives, the fishermen were today warned they now face massive fines for practising their sport on the docks.

A Port spokesman said today: \" Working in consultation with the council\'s city solicitor, the Port of Sunderland is now considering a significant number of cases for possible prosecution against people found trespassing in the port\'s docks area, particularly to fish, despite numerous safety warnings and security fences put in place to deter them.

\" Obviously, given the number of potential cases, this process will take some time to complete.

\"The city council would stress that the port is private property and public access is strictly prohibited on security and health and safety grounds. Anyone trespassing in the area not only puts themselves at risk of prosecution but also at risk to their lives.\"

During the mid-1980s, two fishermen lost their lives when they were swept into the sea from Hendon sea wall and another was rescued in 1998 when he was washed off the sea wall. These were followed by the recent near-misses.

Northumbria Police\'s Hendon Task Force has been supporting port security and helping provide information on the 40-plus prosecutions that are pending, initiated by Sunderland Council who own the port.

Dozens of new signs are also being created to go around the perimeter of the restricted area to reinforce the new tough stance on trespassing.

Inspector Gordon Makepeace, of the Hendon Community Team, said: \"As a result of concerns raised by the Port of Sunderland, an agreed protocol was established which enabled us to assist in identifying people trespassing on their land and provide the authority with the necessary information required for a prosecution if it was required.

\"This was introduced both for the safety of the people trespassing and for security and integrity of the site.\"

Coastguard crews said the sea wall, south outlet and new south pier are unguarded and virtually unlit – designed as sea defences, not for public access.

Simon Tait, station officer at Sunderland Coastguard, said: \"Our sole concern is the prevention of accidents. We regularly patrol this area to warn fishermen of the dangers.

\"Recent tragedies at Redcar and Scarborough have demonstrated the power of the sea in similar situations.

Well done Sunderland council on money well spent. I wish I could meet one of the spongers, in fact I might just do that when they have their next council meeting.

It really is boiling my p***, I\'m foaming, the more I read it, the more I want to take one of the useless t***s to the South Pier and show them how \'unsafe\' it is!

If they\'re that bothered about it being unsafe, why don\'t they use the money they\'re going to use to prosecute all these lads, and put safety rails on the pier!!

As for Mr Simon Tait, station officer at Sunderland coastguard, I bet theres plenty of lads on here who know a hell of a lot more about sea conditions than he does.

If all these do-gooders would just sit and listen to anglers, they might learn a thing or two.

    Rant over (for now)

Thanks Paula, gave up in the end, so just cut and pasted it lol

iI\'ve just sent a letter to the reporter who wrote the story to put the anglers perspective oni it!

      Here it is....

I\'ve just read your article and I thought you\'d like the opinion of an angler.

Firstly, when the coastguard say that the New South Pier wasn\'t designed for public access, why did the Port of Sunderland charge £11.50 a year to fish from it?

Secondly, why can\'t Sunderland council liase with anglers regarding a re-introduction to a permit system to access the South Pier as before, instead of alienating the city\'s sea anglers by prosecuting them (Money which could be spent on making the venues safe!)

Thirdly, I have no doubt that Simon Tait (Station officer at Sunderland Coastguard) has some knowledge/experience of sea/weather conditions, but I will put money on that there are a vast amount of sea anglers (myself included, who has been fishing for 30 years) who can read sea/weather conditions better than him. My point here being why not pool the knowledge. It seems to me that everyone has joined forces about this issue except the one party who this is all about - the sea angler, the average man who gets in from work and goes fishing. We\'re not rapists, thieves, murderers. We work, pay our taxes and fish from places our fathers and grandfathers fished, including the New South Pier and Hendon dock wall.

Lastly, do you realise that the Port of Seaham have had a similar situation regarding the North pier - one of the most dangerous piers on the North East coast.? Their answer? They started a permit system where you had to be a member of Seaham sea angling club to gain a permit. They are now in the process of building access to the North Pier. Why has all this happened - because they sat down and talked to the anglers. Something, I\'m afraid, our caring council seem incapable of.

I hope these points go some way to make you understand the frustration we Sea Anglers are experiencing over the negative press we are receiving at the minute.

We want to fish, nothing more.

              Good letter, Davy
I paricularly like the bit about the Port of Seaham actively consulting with anglers over a similar situation.

However, just as Gordon has mentioned, the current \"claims cultture\" is something all Local Authorities are VERY aware of and as a result, there have been some absolutley ridiculous rules & regs introduced in an effort to prevent any Actions against them.

You\'ve made some very good points in your letter, but then again......so does the original report.......eg \".......the port is private property and public access is strictly prohibited........\" and \"...by-laws have restricted access to the docks for years....\"

Don\'t misunderstand Davy, I really hope that your letter will lead to some consultation between not only the Port, the Council and the Police, but also with the anglers who use the pier.

When all\'s said & done though.......the land DOES belong to the Port / Council........so I can see you having a hell of a battle to get them to reverse their decision

It is a blatant mis-use of the terror laws , when they brought them in the cry was \"if your not guilty , you\'ve got nothing to fear\" . What a set of lying ****s , it\'s the most controlling goverment we\'ve ever had and they ask us to trust them on the fishing document .I dont think so .

There will probably be some one from that authority reading this post and if they see you are angry they will win.
As every one else has said I also would love to see your reply from them. Be calm and enjoy mate.

                              JUST A SUGGESTION:-

Why don\'t all those who have similar concerns about this, follow Davys lead and write similar letters to the Echo. The more letters they get calling for anglers to be consulted on the issue, the more they are likely to approach the Authority asking as WHY have they not already done so.
If the Echo is anything like the Shields Gazette, they will be only too happy to put any pressure they can on the Authority.

I\'m sure Davy would be able to supply you with the name of the reporter he wrote to and the address to send your letters to.

                              Just a word of caution though........as Jim said.......\"don\'t go in angry\" .

By all means get your point accross in a forceful way, but keep your leters \"polite\".........just as Davy did.
