  • Shakespeare Tidewater 11ft6in Bass Rod

I have seen an offer in the Sea angler magazine this month for a combo to accompany the above rod. My querie is are these any good as the combo impiles they are for spinning yet the review I read seemed to think they were more for chucking crab baits etc into the surf. or am I reading this wrong and can be used for both?

"This is too good to miss – a Shakespeare Tidewater bass rod, Okuma fixed-spool, braid and a selection of lures for only £60. The whole lot sells for £119.94, but buy now and save almost 60 quid."

    LOOKS LIKE A GOOD BUY

    Product Description
We know times are tough but that doesn’t mean you have to bass fish with trash tackle. That’s why we have teamed up with Glasgow Angling Centre to offer you a worthwhile deal that saves you money and gets you fishing.

Star of the show is the 11ft 6in Shakespeare Tidewater bass rod, which is capable of casting bait and lures to 4oz. The low diameter blank and quality fittings make the rod a joy to use, and a bass pulling hard on the rod tip would make your day.

Okuma reels need little introduction, so let’s get on with it and say this Silvara Pro SCP 55 fixed-spool sports a graphite spool, capable of taking 380 yards of 10lb line. It runs on a single ball bearing and has a multi-disc drag and left or right-hand wind handle.

To go with the reel you get a 300-metre spool of 30lb Fisheagle Superbraid, which is thin and very strong. The lure range includes a selection of brightly coloured Ron Thompson Coast lures, a 60g Abu Koster silver lure and four 50g Sea Creel lures.

Don’t forget you can use this outfit for bait fishing too. Clip a trace to the end of the line and bait the hooks with a crab… and all we can say is bass beware!

Most bass rods of this length will allow you to ledger baits for the likes of bass or flatties and will spin or float fish but on the heavier side. Great when it gets a bit choppy on the rocks or ground gets a bit heavy. Like to use mine for bumping jellyworms off the bottom as it's got a bit more to it.

If you think the set up is a bit too heavy look at the Shakespear Salt Flattie. Same length but a bit lighter. Quality fittings, got one last year and it's great to spin and float. Was meant for pollock in Ireland but couldn't get on the bigger pollack shots due to the swells but done well inside the harbours floating for wrasse. Intention was to have the bass rod set up for floating on a mark where there's double figure pollack (our best about 5lb) and the flattie with a spinner so you didn't need to change the whole set-up.

Most Okuma reels are good value, the more you pay the better quality you're getting.
