  • Casting lessons

Hi Lads, anyone know where I could get some lessons ? I am an experienced coarse angler and I thought I was a good caster. I certainly was with freshwater feeder gear. However I just can't get the hang of casting with a beachcaster. It seems whatever I do I can't get over 50 or 60 yards. I reckon I am doing something badly wrong which could hopefully be corrected.

I have tried 12' and 13' rods, fixed spool and multiplier, 25lb straight through, 18lb with 60lb shocker, 18lb with tapered shocker. Nothing really helps so I reckon it must be a major flaw in my technique. My current outfit is a 13' Sonik and Penn 525 mag.

Happy to pay the going rate of course. Any help much appreciated.

Before shelling out for lessons, take a look on youtube. Some good info on there.

          A couple of suggestions:

Drop the brakes back a little on your multiplier and then cast it slow and smooth, and keep the release point high.

Loads of folks throw a ton of grunt into their cast and release the reel spool far too late. This results in a greater likelihood of a birdsnest and shorter distance achieved.

Massive distance can require training to get good technique, but I am a great believer that pretty much anyone can hit the 100 yard barrier using some simple trial and error and common sense.

Use throwing a ball as an example - at least some of the same principles as casting apply to throwing in terms of point of release in relation to distance. Release too late and your distance suffers badly.

Most of the big casters I know don't look like they are really trying - most of the folks I've met who were struggling to cast over the years were doing the opposite - they were trying far too hard, and not paying attention to repeating the same steps each time and then making adjustments in them to monitor changes in distance.

Just my thoughts, for the little they are worth.

          Good luck !

Well m8 you dont need lessons all you need to do is when you have a bit spare time is go down to the beach or a pier and practice your casting untill you get the hang of it and i just started when i was younger with a fixed spool untill i was getting a fair distance and then moved on to the multiplier from that and i got better and better untill i can cast just over 200 yds now and i am 71yrs old now and you can even use a football field too when no one is around okay m8.

learn to cast otg its far easier to learn than pendlum and can achieve great distances but make sure your rods up to it as the rod is loaded up instantly and could break if just a micky mouse job,

If yer only getting that distance I would say you have the reel set up wrong. Though i've never used that reel I'm guessing to much tension on the spool. Slacken the tensioner off, assuming there is a one, until you get slight lateral movement on the spool if you aint already done so.
