  • sometimes a bad days fishing is worse than a day at work

I haven't been out for a couple of weeks and was really getting the itch.. you know what it's like, no expectations, but you've just sometimes gotta take a chance and get out to try your luck.

Drove down to Clauxhaugh about 11am but the tide was still well out, went down river to Pallion but still no water to fish into. Next a quick look at Roker Pier, but one look at the water coming over the top sent me to the Ratty. There was a few down, but nothing was getting caught. Next on the list was the Glass Centre. Missed the turnoff but took the next one down to what was the Bonnersfield. Had a walk about and decided to give it a go.

I was just baiting up when I heard a massive bang, nearly shat myself. Looked around to see a huge disturbance in the water. I checked the bridge, but couldn't see anyone. My first thought was 'jumper', but I never heard any scream. I was about 60/70 yards away but I saw a bright colour in the water, which made me think of a floatation suit for some reason.

Basically I convinced myself that it was an exercise or rubbish that someone had chucked off the bridge. That might sound strange to you, but earlier, when I was trying to find a place to fish, I'd seen several police vans, including one that dropped 3 cadets off at Clauxhaugh and they started walking down river. basically I assummed they were searching the banks for the young lad who fell into the river at Willington during the week.

For the next hour the Police and RNLI searched the river but found nothing. I still haven't had it confirmed that it was a jumper, but the longer they searched, the more I think it was.

For the record I caught nowt, and last cast my old ABU wouldn't re-engage to retrieve so I had to hand ball my line back in. Normally that would have enough to p1ss me off, but today it's pretty inconsequential.

Could I have done something? I guess I'll never know, but for the record, I don't think I'll forget that sound. Now I 'm going out to have a few beers and try and sort my head out.

Why don,t you contact Northumbria Police to find out. I,m sure someone will tell you especially with you being a witness.

Mick, they walked or rode passed me half a dozen times, but realistically I saw nothing, and they certainly didn't ask me anything. I guess someone on the bridge called it in, that's why they all responded so quickly.

Who know's what was going through his head to do something like that, but maybe he's found a little peace now.

            not nice mate at all
happend to me years ago on the tyne bridge! was driving over getting very close to the newcastle end and a young lad just walked towards the barrier climbed over and dissapeard! flagged a copper down as soon as i could because you couldnt stop on the main drag for obvious reasons!
heard nowt back but i think the lad climbed into the inspection cages that
            were underneath!
dont beat yourself up mate nowt you could av done if it was what you think and keep this in mind you might not be here to do this post if you had tried and it turned out to be nothing!

Could have been anything mate,a lot of things get chucked off the bridge by people walking over it usually on a night time on there way back from the pub...lol.........The police and lifeboats could they not still be looking for the body of the young lad who went in upriver last week.
Nothing you could of done if it was someone jumping, wouldnt worry about it

When i wasn't much more than a baby (many many years ago) my dad was evening fishing Mitchit lakes down south with a mate and there was a bunch of lads making a racket on the far side. as the sun was setting there was a loud splash and their racket went from mischief to panic as they screamed their friend had fallen in and none of them could swim. My dad, who would of been in his mid 30s at the time was about 19 stone at the time due to darts/beer got there as soon as he could. He was however a strong swimmer and dived into the now dark lake to try to save the lad. After going under for the third time he found himself getting tangled in weed and realising that as he was heavily out of breath despite surfacing two times the lad was likely lost.

An inquest was held and despite it taking police divers nearly an hour to locate and cut the lad free from the weed, the **** of a judge, rather than commending my days efforts said that if he had acted faster the lad may well have been saved.
