  • Walkway Help

Allright lads I've fished the Walkway in Shields a few times and always lose loads of gear to snags. I have tried the first corner , the area between the wooden jetties and also further up past the jetties near the steps. All of these ate my leads Does anyone know if there is a good bit of the walkway to fish from where you don't lose as much gear as the other parts?

What tide are you fishing it on mate? And how far are you casting. You need a good 80 yard + chuck to clear the snags, and if fishing on an outgoing tide the flow will run you right into snags even with a griplead. Its the same at north shields fish quay.

Only fish the walkway on small tides, and an incoming tide, give it a good 80 yrd + chuck and you should clear the snags and hold bottom.

If this doesent help give this a read mate, it helped me

Thanks Dean. I usually fish over low tide - two down two up. I'm not very good at judging casting distance but I would guess I can chuck about 60-70 yards maybe. I usually lose four or five leads over a four hour session there but have lost more on occasion. Just wondering if there is a part less snaggy than the rest.

Between the old pilot (or is it police) jetty and the wooden jetty is a nightmare for snags, up river from the wooden jetty is best and as said a good chuck helps. i've never fished it at low water but high water on a small tide is ok. If it's a big tide yel get swepped away and sometimes snagged up until the flood eases off a bit.

Hi Thunderpants as i fished the walkway a couple of weeks ago and lost rigs there where the wooden jetty is and found out if i cast a 100 yds or so i was spot on and then i started to catch flatties flounders and coalies after that but they say different areas different casts and it seems you just cant win can you.

middle of the walkway isnt too bad, asthe lads say the further you cast the better chance you have of getting the gear back...let a good bit slack line out when you hit the bottom this will help your sinker hold but will decrease your bite detection but if you get anything half decent on your sinker will pull out and your tip will start nodding as the sinker bounces along the bottom.....when you reel in keep your rod tip high and dont stop winding, use a decent sinker with grip s minimum of six ounce on tides bigger than 4.7........smaller tides you might get away with a five ounce..........most of the lost gear is caused by tide pull bringing the leads closer into the snags if you hold the bottom and your casting 70 yards plus then you can get away with losing no gear....hope this helps
