Penn Fathom15 v Penn525mag2
Penn 525 mag2
Quieter when casting, mag breaking so can easily be adjusted during fishing session and can be wound back during the cast if distance is important and achieve greater distance than the fathom with smaller baits also counter balanced handle is good for fast winding.
Fathom 15
centrifugal breaks so have the choice of how many break blocks you have out to control speed off the reel. slightly noisey when casting but still achieve same distances with big baits as the mag. Big power handle and high torque gears for winching and stronger constructed drive gears and pinion.
Both made in china so as said by people before they are only as good as the parts they are made from.. However I have heard there has been some batches coming out of china with better quality stainless steel gears so only time will tell.
So far the fathom is still getting run in as only used it half a season but going strong.
I have the Penn 525 mag extras made in usa no problems with them apart from a noisey pinion support bearing to replace.
Both good reels. A personal choice a reel with or without mags that is the question?. Also the type of fishing you plan to do these are clean/ mixed ground reels. The fathom may suggest a rough ground reel but neither are upto real heavy ground work in my opinion.

mag
havn't used the mag2 or fathom, but have a couple of mag extras which ive used over a year now and personaly think they are the best small reel i have had and cope very well for my kind of casting [not pendulum , but could easily cope with it] as for fishing with they are solid and with a strong drag system, so for the price they are a very good 2nd hand alternative.
