Greys Mag Reel.

Just lashed out a bit and bought myself a Greys G Mag 7 multi, Having used Fixed spools in the past Im determined to master the multi without the old nesting problems ! Fingers crossed then !

Take ya time and don't try and rush things. Things will be good after a few casts, just build up a bit at a time.

Cheers Lads, will let you know how it goes. I couldnt quite get the hang of casting a multi before so Im hoping a one with two types of brakes might help. If it goes well, I will probably upgrade.

I got an okuma magnetix to help me learn. Ive got it mastered from the beach now but tried from blyth pier the other week and was nesting all the time dont understand why lol. Plenty more practice needed I think before I lash out on a Penn 525

Blyth Pier makes multi chucking awkward IMO unless you can get on the end with a bit space and you won't be able to do that for a while Even then youve got that post right in the way so yer limited to a over the napper. I think the last time I had a shot there I ended up doing some sort of aerial ground cast when fishing before the end. Didn't like it.

dead easy m8, take a bottle of cheap cider, put ya cap on backwards, ask every1 on the end to lend you a tab, you`l have it all to yourself in no time at all. keep practising m8, even on the school field.

If I may make a suggestion:

put your mag on 2, 3 or even 4 (for the sake of an example) and just leave it there.

Get the hang of casting using the centrifugal brakes first - you will need that skill before using the mags as well.

Once you feel very comfy casting with only the centrifugal brakes, start easing the mags off once the lead and bait are airborn.

Mags take a bit of getting used to and if this is your attempt to get your head around multi casting it may make sense to tackle the two parts of the cast separately.

Mag reels are mostly wasted on me - on my Abu 6500 C3 CT Mag High Speed (what a mouthful that is) I leave the mags off completely or, if I'm casting into a high wind, I put it on level 2 and leave it alone. That's why I stick mostly with centrifugally braked reels which, if you get your head around them properly, can cast far further than I'd want to fish at.

Good luck with it, and if I could add one more point, concentrate on a smooth cast and release which goes a very long way to ironing out birds nests.

Avoid the bird's nest

The best thing to do when your starting with a Multipliers, once you have set up to practice casting hold the rod at about 70-80° wind the weight to about a foot from the rod tip tighten the brakes put your thumb on the spool, press the button to disengage the clutch now take your thumb off the spool, chances are the weight will not move ease the brakes off until the weight drops, stop the spool with your thumb them engage the clutch (turn the handle) tighten the brake by a very small amount then repeat the process but this time let the weight drop to the ground and you should just get a couple of lose turns of line at the most on the spool.
