  • Century rods ?

    Who/where to buy from ?

I had a play with a couple of Century rods this morning via a friend and was blown away.

I've only tried a couple of Greys and Zipplex but, from those I tried, the Century rods came out ahead by a country mile. I'm still using a pair of ancient Penn INX-S 2 Groundcaster rods or Diawa Moonrakers and, although I enjoy fishing with them, the Century rods were a revelation by comparison.

I'm up at the caravan at the moment near Berwick, but for future reference (probably next week) where do you folks recommend I source one or two ?

My plan is to eventually end up with a matched pair of rods and reels so that I can leave a full setup back at home and an identical outfit up here instead of carting stuff back and forward every time I come up here.

So, do you folks have any preferred sources for Century rods that I should know about ?

    Thanks in advance.

Try Simon at Lewis Tackle in Whitley Bay - not sure what he's got in the shop at the moment but he can get any that you want. His prices are normally pretty competitive & you'll get an extra 10% discount as a NESA member as well.

          Hello Barry,
          Great choice

As Gary has said try Lewis's in Whitley Bay.

I was in Frasers today, at Gateshead so not too far from work for you, and they have several models in stock and can order rods for you.

Also Reelsport in South Shields and Rutherfords in Roker Avenue are both Century stockists

ID fishing in Newcastle are also worth a look.

          Regards Ian

Thanks everyone for the very rapid replies

            Ian:
I'd been dwelling a lot on our conversation from that afternoon when we met but it was only when I tried a couple of Century rods myself that I had the "moment of clarity" and the penny dropped.

I'll try and free a couple of days up next week to chase this down but I'm starting off down that road now, and I doubt there will be anything stopping me...

                    Several things happened today:
                    1. I tried a Zziiplex M4 Evo
                    2. I also tried a Penn Extreme beachcaster
                    3. One of my SL30SH reels blew its guts out and is now officially FUBAR

The Zziplex was a revelation, and has possibly upset my plans for a pair of new Century rods. I still can't work out how they crammed that much casting power into such a slimline blank

The Penn was a real surprise. A mate of mine is often heard to say "I only Penn" when referring to his fishing gear and when I tried his rod for a while today I was unexpectedly surprised by just how easy it was to handle. Plenty of power, easy to load and good bite detection. Nice.

The spectacular failure of one of my SL30SH reels has sealed the other ones fate - I've disliked them since I got them and having one fail utterly on me means the other (which is still in its box back at home) is getting the boot.

The handle won't crank, the reel basically locked up about half way through my cast. Things were going as planned until midway through the cast and after a brief moment of a horrible toothy grinding noise the reel completely locked up. The clutch won't disengage and everything is well and truly stuck. My rig, mackerel bait and a good 80 plus yards of line disappeared towards the horizon...

I've called the shop I bought it from a few weeks ago and arranged to drop it in next week. The other one will go on eBay or be sold on here

Anyhow, I still intend chasing down Century rods next week or the week after, but that M4 Evo and the Penn where both superb rods and I guess I just wasn't prepared for how predictable and powerful they were in use.

                    Hmmm...

Century will be the Right choice as you know what you will be getting where as zziplex rods are all diffrent I had to lt bullets both identical but they both felt diffrent to cast and fish with one was a lot stiffer than the other etc could be because they are all hand crafted by Mr Carroll

OK, what are the general thoughts on Century Carbon Metal Express 14' rods ?

I'm leaning that way at the moment, but open to (polite) suggestions
