Angling faux pas can't be uncommon.
Here's mine for the day (and I hope it's my last for a while ).
I have an old Abu TGC6000 that I'm very fond of, mainly because of the fish I've taken with it over the years. I gave the reel a quick wipe down this morning and spooled it up with 18lb Sakuma Nite Crystal with a view of maybe taking it for a spin this afternoon.
Then I got to thinking (and we all know that it ends in tears the moment any of that nonsense starts ) it had been a long while since I last used it - probably a decade or so - so a service seemed in order to get things running as nature intended.
A quick check and I discovered I'd left my mini screwdriver sets at home. Never mind, a Swiss Army Champ should do the trick, thinks I.
Reel oil.
Had a look in my Abu UltraCast box and pulled out a tube of Abu reel oil. Just the ticket, except it was empty
I don't keep much gear up here at the caravan, and at that point we all know I should have given up and waited, however...
The service actually went pretty smoothly, all things considered. There was the usual swearing and rummaging around on the floor when I dropped a couple of components, and blasting all the parts off outside with WD40 got rid of all the old oil, grease and collective crap that had gathered on the internals.
Wiped all the bits dry with kitchen roll, and got my can of 3-in-1 oil out in lieu of reel oil (for those who don't know, 3-in1 (depending on the brand) is the same viscosity as Rocket Fuel reel oil) and gave the reel a drop here and there where required.
Reassembly went well, or so I thought...
Went to crank the reel.
Nothing.
Out of curiosity I disengaged the clutch, which worked fine, then tried to wind the handle to re-engage it.
Nothing.
I didn't get to where I am today without realising that something was not quite right so, again, out of curiosity, I tried winding the reel backwards and much to my surprise it worked perfectly that way.
Old hands will already know what's coming next, but on removing the right sideplate a second time I discovered that I'd installed the Instant Anti Reverse backwards.
As per thread titile, it's a mistake any fool can make, and I did
I've serviced my reels more times than I can remember but this is the first time I've managed to do something that daft.
Thought it might make some of you smile - it did me once I figured out what the heck I'd done.
I can't be the only one who managed to do something stupid recently, so, over to you lot - here's your chance to admit your angling anomalies and sins
