Went fishing on the Ratty tonight for a few hours. Not a soul on, and neither was there on the Roker pier from what i could see looking over.
Second cast my rod had a right knock, after bringing it in i thought it was a whitey, but it was a Tommy cod about 10inches long.
So after failing miserably over the last 4 to 5 months trying to catch my first cod/codling does this count for me breaking my cod duck.
Had another 2 great knocks, but missed them as i was baiting up my other rig, and was too slow to pick my rod up. But never mind, still better than watching the rubbish on the tv.
I used black lug, mussel, macky and raw prawn. The Tommy was caught on black lug.

If you're desperate,it is a codling i suppose,but really it's your first SIZE codling (36 centimetres) that i've always understood to be your "duck breaker",and do'nt worry too much,it will happen as long as you keep trying.Good luck

Your wrong there mate, for a Codling to be sizeable it must be 35cms or more.

Fancy robbing him of a centimeter!

Cheers Lads, i know it's all tongue in cheek, but when you're desperate to say you've caught a cod/codling i'll take it, and it was only 10cm shy of a sized one . At least there's only one way to go now, and that's bigger and better.

It was the exact same for me and my youngun with our first cod/codling/tommy whatever you like, typical mate but like you say they can only get bigger now.

Yes! According to my 11yr son it does!
I was watching him pull in whiting after whiting on the pier, "armt you goin to catch owt like dad?" cheeky little gitt!
I told him I was fishing for cod.
Just then he pulls out a 8" tommy and says "don't worry dad! Leave the cod to me as well"

sorry lads but its becoming really hard for folk to catch size codling have struggled for years and still yet to catch sommit decent ..im even thinking about rapping it in ..a might try one more season see how it goes

Ha Ha, very true mate. I don't mind really, as i said before it's a little tongue in cheek, i was only joking when i said 'does it count' . i've resigned myself to be catching no decent codling this season. There's always next season.

It's sods law, the same when i take my son, we use the same bait, rigs, etc and you can bet your life he'll catch more than me.

But a cod is a cod no matter what size it is, just like the word codling is BS aswell, do we have small flounder called flounderling. Is a rottweiler puppy not a rottweiler, crazy stuff ey,, mine still counts I tell ya.

Actually, for Cod, a Cod is a fish of 6lb or more, anything less is classified as a Codling.

A suppose it would count as a first codling as in that paticular species you/him/whoever, but its certainly doesnt count when it comes to being a sizable fish.

I don't understand why cod can be taken and killed at 35cm, when they don't breed until they over 50cm.
What is the point of minimum size limits that allow fish to be taken before they reach sexual maturity?

I suppose it varies from area to area, as to whether or not a fish is referred to as a cod/codling,a bit like "your not a man until your eighteen".Where i come from it's always been a codling if it was less than five pound or so,but like i say ,it depends where you're from,and probably the stamp of fish you're accustomed to catching.Might catch twenty pound codling in Norway

There is actually no such thing as a codling, a codling is just a "used" term for a young cod.
