SL30SH frame upgrade ?

I really tried to like my SL30SH reels, but I don't.

I bought two and ended up giving one away to my mate after an hour or so spent trying to get along with it, and the other is sitting in its box, unlikely to be used.

Luck being the fickle thing it is, a well meaning relative bought me another SL30SH recently as a gift, so I'm back to two again

Speaking with my uncle yesterday he told me that quite a few guys he knows in Canada have bought an after-market upgrade that completely changed their SL30SH/SHA reels and transformed them into low profile casting reels with much greater strength and stability.

Sounds too good to be true, right ?

Has anyone used one of these in anger ?

It looks like it would change the playing field completely and turn the SL30SH into a reel I could be more comfortable with. Given that I still have two my choices are either sell them and buy into something else or look at this frame/side plate/clutch lever/frame bearing upgrade.

It looks like it would drop the profile of the reel to bring the spool (and your thumb) closer to the rod for casting, and make the spool a lot more accessible for cold fingers. I'm very tempted.

Please note, before anyone gets excited, I'd like to point out that there is nothing fundamentally wrong with the SL30SH - I am just so used to lower profile Abu reels that I simply don't get along with the higher Daiwa, so it's down to me and not the reel, before anyone thinks I'm taking cheap shots...

if a had bought, sold, altered, upgraded,played with, tried as many reels as u m8, a would pack up and try golf......!

Perhaps you are confusing me with someone else ?

I've sold no reels (given one away to a NESA forum member though) and I've never upgraded or altered one either.

I do own quite a few reels (mainly Abu) and I tend to mainly use two of them.

This is nothing more than a possible way to turn reels I don't get along with into reels I am comfortable with.

As I say, perhaps you have me confused with someone else...

I've got a 7000c synchro on one rod and a sl30sh on another.
The difference in spool height is about 5mm.
I've got big hands and sometimes use a 9000c with no problem.
If your struggling with the slosh I say sell it, or buy a slimmer rod.
Or change to fixed spool perhaps?

Just sell your slosh's then put the money you would of spent on the two kits and postage to upgrade yours and buy a pair of reels you want.

Just sell them and buy a Saltist or Penn Fathom,got both and will suit you more.

What I cant understand in your post you state you don't like the SLOSH 30 because you find it to high to get a good grip of the spool.

You then say you prefer the abu 7000 with levelwind.
Now to me the SLOSH 30 is so easy to grip the spool and I can cast it hard using slow pendulum or off the ground power cast no bother at all.

Now when it comes to the abu 7000 levelwind reels its impossible to grip the spool when casting hard....its ok if you lobbing over your head but not when power casting.
The reason is when trying to get a good grip on the spool the top bar that the levelwind runs in stops you wrapping your thumb over the spool.

The standard SLOSH 30 is a great reel and doesn't need any modification to it and is plenty strong for what its intended for using 30/40lb line and fishing into kelp.

As others has posted if you dont like sell them.

There are several reasons why I don't like the SL30SH.

The important thing is that I don't get on with it - the reasons are less important than resolving the problem.

I can change what I have, move to a different product or live with what I don't like.

What one person likes another may not. If I get on well with an Abu 7000 levelwind reel that others don't, and others get on with a SL30SH and I don't, all that proves is people like to use what works for them, which is as it should be.

At the risk of repeating myself, the product is obviously fine for lots of people, which is academic if I am not one of them. I am only exploring a possible way forward.

At the end of the day it is a slosh30 modify it as much as you like and it will still be a slosh. In my mind a good all round real strong and reliable and it will hold it's own with most modern day reals.
