with my saltist magged up its put 40\50 yds on my cast it might not be everybody cup of tea drilling holes in reels but am a poor caster and I give it a try with the mag its a gamble I no but it worked for me ever good caster I no iv done somthing with they reelsl (qtc frame)( upgrade bearing)( and maged up)
Magging a saltist is probably the worst thing you can do to it. The nobby mags you fit onto them, even the smalk ones, are a rite pain, especially to fish with. They stick rite in your arm when reeling in and are very prone to snapping.
You could probably cast further without the mag system, got excellent distances when a had my two saltist 20h's, and neither of them were magged.
I've not used Saltist reels but, for my money, the easiest out-the-box reel I ever used for throwing big casts was an Abu Rocket. I could/can throw further with a Rocket/Blue Elite than I could/can with magged reels.
That's largely down to me, not the kit, and I freely admit it.
IMHO unless you wind the mag throughout the cast to get the best from it (a la tournament casters) then there's not too much in favour of a mag reel to begin with if you set it and forget it; not to me anyway.
This is all very subjective and not much of it is applicable if the fish are feeding in a gully forty yards out...
Whatever works is OK at the end of the day, but distance casting is worlds apart from throwing a big cod bait in a stiff wind IMHO, and a go-faster real could easily introduce problems under fishing conditions.
Just an opinion - your mileage may vary
My apologies again for straying off topic but the rationale underlying this interests me.

You couldnt have worded that better mate, your exactly rite.
If you want a magged reel, you should buy one that has been designed with a mag system encorperated into the reel (i.e. the Penn 525 Mag, Daiwa 7HT Mag, etc)
With the reel magged u got a option if u want it out a bit further that's what I got it for just incase the fish are feeding 100yds out instead of 50yds that's my normal distance I cast, like I say am no caster.
Don't bother spending money on it. If it were a slosh shv or Sha with the gold spool and floating speed shaft similar to the saltist then some abec bearing and a mag would speed things up and wind the mags off during the cast to feed the lead as the line diameter decreases on the spool to see reel benefits.
