  • any smoothhounds in the north east?

    Alreet everyone.
    I was jus wondering if anyone has ever caught,seen or heard of any one catching smoothounds in the tyneside,northumberland area?
    I cant find any pics or info in my old sea angler mags or on the net bout north east smoothhounds and accordin to fish distrib maps there all round the british coast especially the starry ones,someone must of caught one from the north east sometime lol, any feedback or info much appricated,thanks a lot!

    they are getting the odd pups off seaham pier in the warmer months so there mothers carnt be too far away

        i knew there must be some geordie smoothhounds!

        thanks mate,i knew theyd be rare up this way but i wanna fish a surf beach for em in the summer,i was thinkin blyth or lynemouth,then while im waitin for the smoothhounds i mite get a bass or two

              thanks again mate, but i jus wondered if any at all get caught north of the tyne? accordin to fish maps they go all the way up to norway,but never seen any pics of a geordie smoothhound at all and ive trawled the internet lookin,jus thought surely the odd few turn up in the summer?

                  apparently i was told off a guy down there they are only around the holderness coast for a short space of time i was told may a good month conditions a light south wind settled weather.

                  just what i was told off macky off another forum.
                  did you know panel pins comes in diff sizes ?

                        I have never seen or heard of a Smouthound being caught north of Whitby,even the trawlers don,t get them this far north.
                        You do get Spurdog,used to get loads of them from the blast beach in late summer but no bigger than 2 pound.The Salmon and Gill netters used to get bigger Spurs,but that's a rarity now.
                        As Coddy says,get yourself down to the Holderness coast, or better further south around Skegness in the summer if you want Smuts.
                        You can also catch them from certain marks in the Solway.
                        Fresh crab is the number one bait..

                            thanks 4 feedback lads! I always wanted to catch one! i reckon in the next few years they be round the tyne beaches if they started gettin em from seaham already!
                            I didnt know u cud catch spurdog from the beach i thought they were a deep water species,mayb il give the spurs a go!
