Fishing help needed.

Hello lads new to this game and looking for advice.
Thinking of going out Mako fishing this weekend and wondering what baits, traces etc. Any ideas of where to go as I am not too sure.
Was thinking of trying the ice house ( maybe a bit ambitious I know ) but have heard of some good catches of bigger fish in the past.
Any information you could give me would be welcome as this is a new thing for me.

Hi Jim, welcome to the site.

Regarding fishing for Mako sharks, for bait use a live porpoise, lip hooked with a size 6 aberdeen to 10lb line, but remember to use a bic biro as a float (block both ends)

I\'ve had bags of up to 50 fish in 2 hours from the glass centre in the Wear. Word of warning, get one of those little nets you used as a young un in ponds to land them, cos the 10lb line snaps when you hand ball them up the wall.

Thank\'s for the replies lads. No it wasn\'t the Sunderland echo ne-fishing I heard about it on here mate.
Davy I got myself a little net and some 10 lb line this morning and have a Porpoise on order and am looking forward to a trip to the ice house.
Alan.f how could you say such a thing. Pi**ed or bored ? I have never been so hurt since I joined NESA mate.
Brian I liked your idea best about using last Sundays joint on a couple of 5/0 trebles and obviously the Barbie outfit. Unfortunately I smoked the said joint just before I started this post this morning. So if you have a spare one please PM me mate.

Have heard that if a porpoise or seal not available for bait that a surfer might do. Only problem with this bait is you have to strike hard and fast on the first take as sharks normally spit them back out. A bit rubbery so i am told, and often refered as being taken by mistake. Beacuse of this you may need to keep a good supply of fresh surfers. Divers might do but they tend to head for the bottom and the hook is hard to set at great depths.

Thank\'s very much for that info Alan did not think of that. Will try Tynemouth beach this weekend to see what is there.
One question though, If there are no surfers willing to help would it be worth trying to abduct a couple of jet skiers. Am sure this would be more appreciated by most and also less possibility of them being missed at a later date lol.

While the ocean vessel \'Jonny Raider\' was commercial fishing for dogfish, this Great White was hooked in the mouth but only
resisted slightly for 15 minutes before it came up alongside the boat to have a look long enough for one of the crew members to slip a rope around it\'s tail !!! \'And that\'s when the s**t hit the fan!! The Shark took off towing the 42 foot fishing boat backwards through the water at about 7 Knots. Just like in JAWS, the boat was taking on water over the stern and the crew watched in horror as the shark would actually jump completely out of the water at times. This went on for an hour before the shark finally drowned. She weighed in at 1035 LBS.
It is suspected she followed a weak El Nino current into local waters in
search of food. Although mid 60 deg. water is considered ideal for
these sharks, the larger ones can tolerate water in the low 50s.

Jim, only problem with using a jet skier is to remember to remove the jetski, as the Mako may have trouble chasing the bait. Personally I would only use them as rubby dubby as they\'re a pain in the a***

If using jet skiers i would use three on a hook at a time and as many as you can get in a tub of rubby dubby. Do not bother about the wasteage.

Just had a thought, Makos are supposed to be very good jumpers, if the sea is a bit choppy instead of float fishing you could dangle a diver, jet skier, surfer from one of those big kites and see if you can get a take. You should be able to cover more area this way.
