I make mine in the kitchen on the hob, but I have to take a few precautions to safe guard the worktops and kitchen unit's. Window/s wide open, Back door wide open, extractor fan on, Heat resistant gloves, mask, and thats before I start. Trying to keep the melted lead and the mould at a constent temprature, Moulds can be damaged if allowed to get to hot, I find mould clamps a great help, warm up the mould prior to the first cast, put a kink in the wire loops if there left straight they can pull out of a made lead. Finally stand back and admire the gleaming shine from your new leads.
yeah if you in the kitchen defo make sure there is enough vent its a dangerous metal to work with

I take the chimney of my chimnea in the back garden and build a nice hot fire within. No fumes and can stand back whilst lead melts.

I get the lead off our sites, thus only having to buy, wires, rollers and top hooks, so I estimate a weight made costs me 12p as no fuel costs. I was buy leads for 80p prior at a well known shop in walker or if desperate from shop in hebburn for £1.20!!!!!

So no brainer for me - I make my own only 5oz though for next to nowt. Next purchase is 6oz mold.

I'm starting to get a few things together, a lad at work is giving me some welding gloves and he's got a camping stove but it needs a gas bottle, he said they're quite expensive for the first one then they're cheaper to get refilled, anyone got any idea how much I'd pay for a gas bottle?

Thanks again for the comments/advice ;-)

do you know what bottle you need, im pretty sure I've got a spare Propane (orange) bottle in the store at work, think a camping drive will either be camping gas or Butane though.

your best option is to see if you can get any empty gas bottle and the place will do an exchange for you ie you take the empty over to the place and they will give you a full one cheaper.i took a big blue empty cannister back and exchanged it for a smaller orange one full of gas for the price of £16.00(New Hartley Caravan place i think it was called) dont forget that you will also need a regulator as well which they also sell at gas places i paid 7 quid for one.Just tell them its for a camping stove!! or the other option is a small camping stove that cost about a fiver and the smaller gas cannisters most places do the cannisters 12 for a tenner and they last for 2 hours and 15 minutes each!!
The only fish i want this year is a double figured cod!!!

i make them also as said make sure mould is dry or there will be spiting. and dont put yor face to close to the mould wen ya pouring cos u wudnt want it spitting in ya eyes also keep your arms coverd up. i use flashing u still get slag on the top but hardley any. best to make ya own works out much cheaper.

I spoke to the lad at work and he said the stove uses the blue bottle, not sure what gas that will be?, I'll ring a few gas suppliers and see what it'll cost to get a bottle and I'll get in touch with you to let you know if I need your bottle, cheers.

The blue bottles contain butane. Many burners will burn both propane (red bottle) and butane but you'll need a regulator that is specific for the gas you're using. If you're just using the disposable canisters there's no need for a reg.

Use the burner outside for maximum ventilation and build a wind break out of bricks to shelter the melting pot. It avoids killing the family budgie with the fumes.

                          Butane burns cooler than propane.
Butane freezes up before propane.(handy to use in a bad winter)
And both give off carbon monoxide poisonous fumes.
Either one will suffice to melt your lead.
