  • Squid and Octopus ?

Does squid actually work as a bait? I have been using it on and off for three years or so and have never caught a thing on it. I have tried big squid from the fish counter, small calamari from the chinese supermarket and also the tiny "party squid" from the tackle shop. My other baits have outfished it every time. Just wondering if it is worth persevering with or if it's main use is just as a tip bait ?

Also, is octopus any good? I ask because they had a big one marked down in Morrisons for only £1.50 so I was wondering if I could have used bits for tipping off?

I had my largest shore caught cod solely on a whole squid, I always use a small squid head when I use a 2 hook flapper and have a pretty good success rate, I'm guessing octopus would be pretty much the same, last time I fished on the sarah jfk someone caught an octopus and used it for bait

Squid can be a great bait, try and buy unwashed squid of falklands squid as the stuff in the supermarkets has been bleached to make it more appealing for human consumption. Same as the boxes of calamari from the tackle shops. If that is all u can get, leave it out the freezer a day or 2 so it can build up a scent.

squid is good bait . octopus is good bait too . some anglers uses live tentacles to singlularly on hooks and it stays alive for about half hr . ( boat fishing abroad) this is where live octopi fetches high price for bait .

squid is good for tipping of especially if your after whiting, i have had sessions where squid has out fished worm or macky.

I used it loads last season. Cheap and bulks up bait. This season i have been using bluey more to bulk up baits. Not as tough as squid. Both seem as good as each other.Again cheap bait.

              Mick.
ps the skin of the squid is a good attracter when you tip off baits with some strips.
