  • Newbiggin Promenade

Is it any good these days? Used to have cracking sessions through the winter fishing from the steps just along from the pub on a Sunday night just after dark.

What I really mean is that has the imported sand all washed away yet to enable fishing from the wall again and is there anyone who has fished there recently or the beach in front. Last time I was up 2 years ago it was completely ruined and the tackle shop had closed down

Don't know about the Chinese sand being washed away but it can only be a matter of time before it's blown away mate. But then they may just import another x many tonnes again Maybe not though after the spending review.
Might be a good question for Wansbeck and District Council

in my opinion it is shocking now, from a fishing point of view they have wreckd what was a good venue,, the steps used to be a top mark, even the key wall itself was a top class mark for whiting fishing which i miss wen the sea was flat as a nacka and nowt else to fish for. the sand is still there aswel m8

Bye lad! this has brought some "smiley" memories back.

When I was about 16/17 ( 30 odd years back) My older brother would sometimes drive up to Newbiggin, taking me with him and we'd night fish the "promenade" for a few hours.

We took some nice fish occasionally, nothing startling, the biggest being around the 3lb mark.

Anyway, your post brought back the most memorable night we fished there and not because of the fish.

We'd been fishing for a few hours, with Tilley lamps for light and heat as usual. Anyway, it was about 2.30 in the morning, we'd hardly had a bite and we decided we'd had enough, so packed up and went back to the car, a massive old Ford Zephyr.

Our lad put one of the lamps on the car roof to give us light to get sorted out, put out the other one and we loaded our gear into the car.

All sorted, we set off for home. After leaving Newbiggin, maybe about a mile down the road, Our lad pulled over and stopped, without a word of explanation. I thought maybe he was going for a pee but then he got out, reached up and took the Tilley lamp off the roof of the car

It was still burning bright and apparently hadn't moved at all. Then with a half a smile He said; " You forgot to take the lamp off the roof"

        Good luck anyway

        cheers

        Steve

That's a great bit of nostalge m8 and yes it was never a big fish mark best we ever had was about a 3lb coddy but loads of flatties and whiteys.
Twas where I caught my first double sided flatties and I sent the photo to the environment agency.
I've heard a lot of complaints about the beach itself being unsafe for families now so it makes you wonder if the death of the shore fishing was really worth it... over to you Wansbeck Council

                  Thanks for the replies lads...
So I presume that's off the beach directly in front of the promenade... might head there then if there's a good northerly gale... anyone fished it at night or recently during the day? Owt around?

There used to be a nice gully about 75 yards out from the prom has the new sand formed any gullies or channels yet? Need a squint at low tide really

Family live in a house right on the prom and there are always lights out there fishing.
So either they are just chancing it our fish are being caught but doubt people would come back time after time if it was dead

im fom newbiggin and there have been some decent whiting caught of the beach. theres been plenty god cod caught of the rocks..

think the beach down from the lifeboat ramp has been fishing the best for whiting..

i had a 12lb cod last week off west end rocks but theres got to be a good northerly sea on

Well done fella gonna head up shortly into the new year I think to try out the old mark again ... no tackle losses was always a bonus too.
Oh and I used to pop to the chinkies halfway into the dark to get chicken curry and rice to eat back on the prom ... always warmed the cockles
