Stainless Steel 1.6mm 1KG TIG Welding Filler Rods, 308L Grade, TIG Welder Consumables, Welding Accessories
Its seems bloody expensive stuff. £24 inc vat, but ya get 64 rods (over 2 feet long I think).
Mild steel is much cheaper but it corrodes. I wouldn't use mild steel wire for the eye. If ya dee you'd best check it every hoy lest its new.
Continued on post number fower.

.... I nivvor used to mak 'breakaways' though.
1.6mm STAINLESS steel TIG wire is 'quite a bit stiffer' than 1.6mm MILD steel TIG wire. Most proprietary breakaways use 0.7mm / 0.8mm stainless steel wire. If ye use a 1.6mm wire yee'll have to open the holes out to 2.0mm or summat like that. Ye knaw worra mean like marra.
If I was makkin breakaways or ordinary grippers the'day I'd probably use these 1.0mm dia stainless steel TIG welding rods ...
Stainless Steel 1.0mm 1KG TIG Welding Filler Rods, 308L Grade, TIG Welder Consumables, Welding Accessories
