All taken on lug mussle squid cocktail ment for cod, how the dabs get a 4\0 hook that far down beats me. All returned to fight another day.

Well done on the Bull, pity no cod but as they say you can only catch whats in front of you.
Did you fish the flat rock or the point.....the point being my top mark for the big cod.

Yeah The trawlers seem to have put pay to the big cod in that area, what a shame as this mark was without doubt the best in the UK for a chance of a 40lb plus cod from the shore.
Was there many bass this summer ?

My favourite spot was always the point, not as much of a walk as the Flat rock.My biggest fish at 19-1/2lb was from the point, plus 6 other smaller doubles from there over the years.
Theres been a few Codling to 6lb taken from the Solway lately, not from Balcary though.
With these strong Westerlies,Senwick in Kircudbright bay can be a good shot for bags of smaller fish if theres any swell.

I've been itching to get out but too fat and old to handle these conditions and wet rocks on me own. Had a session on Monreith beach a couple of weeks ago to try out my new mag 2, pin whiting, under size coleys and a few dog fish
The comp was the Dalbeattie cod festival and was won with a codling of 4lb 9oz.Regards, Graham

No swell at all due to wind turning more northerly, plenty of sunshine could have done with more movement may have pushed a few fish in. 2 porpoise spent 2 hours feeding 300 yards off shore,no idea what they were feeding on good to see them though.More cod are caught on the English side at red and blank bank dont know if it was always like that, or just the past 5 to 10 years.

I will give Balcary ago after xmas. NW quiet for cod late winter i think. Ive fished the point. And yes i did follow the path carrying all my gear, all the way round only to discover my car parked at the bottom of the fields bellow me. Hope you hit em next time.

Back in the 80's, when Ken Robinson and me fished Balcary point, we always picked a small to medium making tide which fell on a dying sea. We found the best time was in December/January, with most fish being caught at half tide, up or down, and always in daylight. Black runnydowns were essential.P.B. Cod 30lb-11ozs Balcary.
