  • Strange Fish, the only fish

Can anyone identify the fish I caught on Saturday night off South Shields pier, was about 1ft long, felt huge bringing it in. This and a Whiting for my mate Stu (which he was overjoyed to get) were the result of 6 hours fishing from 10pm Satrurday night to 4am Sunday morning.
Caught using a 5/0 pulley with a 4oz normal weight.

Defo a granny fish/scorpion fish. Not poisonous contrary to many people's belief. Was walking along the river near the angel with my youngest and she said dad look those people are being horrible to that fish. As I turned I some some idiot trying to kick one off his line. He looked and sounded like he probably could have done that to a whitey aswel but apparently I'm not allowed to say anything (my daughter said) as I have a on a few occasions when seeing such stuff and she doesn't like me getting like that. Lovely looking fish I think

My mate thought it was venomous, so advised not to touch it, although the net says they can give you a sting, luckily the hook was in its lip, so we took the hook out using a pair of scissors (gripping the hook with them), and returned it unharmed.
As i said fishing was very poor off South Shields pier on Saturday night. Looking for new places if anyone can offer some new spots to try.

Yep a granny fish, they have spikes on there gill covers and dorsal fin which vibrate and that's when people get a shock, iv seen my dad just pick them off with no problems and he hasnt been poisoned yet

Don"t mean to be cheeky mate, but if you use 5/0 hooks you might not be giving yourself the best chance of many fish on quiet nights Bit smaller ones maybe
                PBs...Cod 8lb2oz.. Turbot 3lb2oz.. Whiting 1lb8oz.. Coalie 1lb9oz.. Flounder 1lb7oz.. Dab 15oz.. Plaice 13oz.. Bass 1lb 6oz

Hey Ross, no offense taken at all, I have only been fishing since April, so all and any good advice appreciated. Do you mean use a smaller hook to catch smaller fish, I usually use Pulley Pennels with a 5/0 main hook with the 3/0 Pennel hook, unfortunately the shop I go to had none, and I couoldn't be bothered to add the hook, next time I will.
