Yes it's a shame, but last couple of times I was in I could see it coming. I don't know if it was a victim of internet shopping or what, but for a few months the shelves were practically empty & whenever i visited I rarely saw another punter.

Since the demise of the shop in Whitley Bay, which I'd used since I was a kid (when it was Temple's...later Fraser's then Lewis's) and liked because I could get practically everything I wanted, all under one roof, I've had to shop around among about half a dozen shops. Anglers Utd was the only place that had the power swivels that I like & I could also stock up on Daiwa Tournament & a few other bits, as well as frozen bait.

I've always preferred the shops - you often get a look at new products that might otherwise go un-noticed if you're just searching e-bay or whatever for the best price on your favourite hooks...also, you'd often run into fellow anglers from other clubs & get a bit of feedback on what had been going on. I think that's what I miss most these days.

I have to say, my new favourite shop (although I've only made it across once so far) is probably Andy Rutherford's...made the trip last spring as he was the only place I could find with an Akios Shuttle in stock - ended up coming away not only with the reel but a good stock of power swivels, big spools of Ultima Powerflex leader, various hooks & whatnot & got a very good price on the whole lot. Just wish he was a bit closer as, like W/Bay, I think I could pretty much get everything i want under the one roof.

shame like, I actually passed it today and looked like they were finishing off clearing it out. That's 3 shops that have closed in the last 12 months, ID, Lewis and Anglers United.
