  • The rivers?

Is it true the rivers don\'t fish when there has been snow or rain due to the amount of freshwater in them?

And if its true, how far out of the river does the effect extend?

I thought fishing in the mouth would be o.k because fish were waiting for anything washed out, although this is probaly totally wrong.

As a rule the rives won\'t fish if they are full of rain water this can stretch as far as the pier ends and beyond, however there was a report a week or two ago,it was maybe the Wear that was in flood,it was still fishing with decent whiting showing,so you never can tell but personally I would\'nt bother. At Blyth you can fish the west pier and cast onto the beach side towards Seaton Sluice if the river is in flood, the dirty flood water funnels out into the main channel, its still not ideal fishing but the water should be clean you\'d be better off trying a beach or rock mark if theres alot of rain water present

Iv\'e fished Roker roundhead many a time when the Wear has been in full flood, fishing into it and caught fish. To me, it doesn\'t make a difference that far out. I posted the other week about the amount of rain water off the end - never seen as much in all my time going there, but there were still plenty of Whiting, and a few codling

Further up the wear, there were big bags of whiting opposite the Glass centre on the same day, so it didn\'t make that much difference.

Was told that sea water is heavier than fresh water, so the fresh water is pushed to the top - is this true, seems to make sense.

the Tynes pretty much the same at the shields end ,fresh water doesnt seem to bother the whiting ,only problem is the amount of rubbish that floats past ,not sure about blyth as im not sure of how far up you have to go for the tidal point but the Tynes up by newburn so plenty salt still in there on the lower stretches plus as davy says the fresh water sits on top and the salt water flows in underneith on the flood and as your fishing the bottom .no problems
          cheers Bri

I think thats true davy , the marina at Royal Quays is normally salt but it is fed at the far end by a freshwater burn . In the cold snaps the water freezes on the surface about 2-3\" . Norman had some good pix of this a while back . One time last year after some heavy floods the tyne poured out several miles to sea with fresh , we could only catch out of the stream that time .

Sal****er is heavier than freshwater so think of it this way....

If the tide is in flood, the freshwater runs out above the sal****er being pushed upstream so fishing on a flood tide can still be productive because your bait is on the bottom anyway.

Fishing the ebb can be a lot less productive because the sal****er is flowing out and the freshwater is taking its place depending on how big the flood of freshwater is.

Also depends on the rivers size / depth.......

The smaller the river the less freshwater needed on an ebb tide to stop fish entering it.
