Two options - cast out close to the line of the skeers you are fishing off. This is a popular tactic even though the water isn\'t as deep but fish tend to run up that way OR gently lob into the middle of the hole, especially on the bigger northerly seas Technical advice - ask Alan Charlton - he was born in the Goatsies and has squatters rights until he\'s 65 (3 years ago) lol

Oh but what a way to while away the time. The only time I ever truanted from school was to keep score at the County Club Jesmond while Northumberland played Yorkshire 2nds at cricket and to collect crabs for the Eyemouth festival between 14 and 18. Information was dripfed by the Old Man, at the right time in the right amounts. Not bad for a ganger on the buildings. Everything I know comes from him.

Stores you cheeky bugga. I must say i remeber the days when you could go down to the goats in the middle of summer with a few crabs, get a few red cod and a sun tan. If you want to fish the goats go down at l.w. on the biggest tide there is and you will see it in all its glory. A yard wide gulley running through some lovely thick kelp, cast into this gulley and that is where you will find the fish, many of my best fish have come from not going right up the skeer but from the rocks just as you get on. That is another matter, many anglers will try and actually go up the Goats skeer itself, you will get so far then whooops, you will be wet. Go up the skeer to the left and as soon as a big boulder shows in the gullet you will be able to cross there. When you are about two yards from the skeer turn seawords and follow the small skeer (it will be underwater) for about fouror five yards and then turn right and onto the Goats Skeer. If you know what you are doing you can get across as soon as the Goats Skeer shows. Have alook at the pathway during daylight first. A gentle lob will put you into the gulley, miss it and be prepared for a right tug of wat to get your gear back. Best time to fish is just when a making sea is coming from the north and putting a little colour in the water. If you fish from the end of the skeer dont be tempetd to cast straight up the middle, lovely weed bed, if you have seen it in daylight cast to the right of the weeds.
I am one of the lucky ones have just previewed Stores book, it is excellent, be prepared for a wealth of angling knowledge and human interest which should put a little tear in your eye.Alan

Told you so. The bearded one sits above Cullercoats as an all seeing all knowing fountain of all that is good in fishing. To me the north side of Cullercoats is a mysterious collection of marks that I know a little about, as opposed to the south side where I feel more at home. Mind you when I was growing up we didn\'t have a car.

I Stores when you have no transport, too young, you certainly get to know your local marks. When I think of the amount of time I spent on the rock ends between North Crab Hill and South Crab Hill (Bears Back) bloody hell you had names for every rock. You knew every rock that moved when getting onto marksAlan
