heard summit about if u set the back rest on its highest setting this could lead to added pressure on the fixings? and cause the box to crack? is this common ?

    back rest

according to template i got with my backrest , it says offer template against hinge of box. centralise using the box mould line . tape in position top and bottom.

then mark with sharp point and driill

it says nothing about hi and low and mark

so unless breakaway have changed instrucions since i got mine, there is only one position you can put it, have anthor look and double check mate hope that helps mate

Does he not mean when you loosen the thumbscrews at the sides and extend the backrest as high as it will go... that I can understand causing stress near the hinge

you could be right but he did say set the back rest not adjust it, but if he did mean that it should not make any difference as i often raise the backrest when sittin and mine is still ok and as most lads know m i am no light weight

            Ah right.
Mine was already converted when I got it so don't know about how its originally attached or owt.
Looking at the whole setup, it looks pretty solid, and if anything, the backrest tube might bend before the box cracks.
I'm certainly not going to put it thru any destructive testing to find out

If that is the case it wouldnt really have been designed to do that the square plates that marry up with the red hinges should sort the stress problem out
I always move it up and lean back of the rest and never had bother with mine
