  • reducing length of rod

would it affect the rod much by having a bit cut off the butt.i like rods of 13-6 or less ,ive bought a m427 hi-flex thats more the 14 ft.like the rod and dont intend to sell it so was thinking of reducing it down a bit.i fish with the reel down the but (about 8 inches up).if i cut 8 to 10 inch of would the action of the rod stay the same.ive got a hst and thats the sort of length id be looking at

Should not make any difference as long as you reduce it from the very bottom of the butt, a lot of rods these days you can get shorter butt sections for anyway as its the top half of the rod that has all the action and dose the majority of the work

yes it makes hell of a difference as there is a counter balance in the rod and once you cut it it breakes the counter balance and the rod dosnt perform as well as it should

i think moving the reel further up will make the rod feel abit stiffer but will not slow u down as much in the cast when its shorter, just put the reel 12-14inch up the butt thats how i cast and fish with my m427.

the closer the bottom ring is to the reel the stiffer the rod will feel if u move the bottom ring up abit it will make it softer

If you want to personalise the rod yeah chop it, but you will get next to nowt resale value. also the hi-flex has a flexible tip and the same butt section as the standard m427 by cutting the butt down you'll have a long flexiable tip and a shorter butt and a reduction in butt power, which will make the tip section feel even softer. sell it and by a m4 or m4 evo at 13ft 5 inches.

Best a luck with your decision mate.

That's pretty much what I said in reply on another board.

The M427 has a power pointed butt and by chopping the standard butt down you alter the position of the power point , should you chop too much off its possible the power point would fall between your hand spacings instead of being above your top hand . I tried a couple of 427's on the field and liked the rod but found the length too much for me to turn over so discussed chopping a standard butt down with the man himself , he suggested that he made me a shorter butt and moved the power point up to compensate leaving me with a 427 thats 6 " shorter than the standard . I personally wouldnt cut it I'd do what gary2010 suggests and move the reel further up .

Best way peter leave it as is and try your reel seat starting at 30cm from the bottom of the butt i found that a good balance point for fishing, and once you get some coddys on it you will love it, great action with plenty a power.

you could try cutting two inches at a time off bottom of butt ,position of fulcrum or powerpoint i would,nt worry to much unless cutting a fair bit of bottom.

downside i think its fair to say it could and probaly knock the selling value down if you ever sell it.
