fishing in thick kelp

what set up do people use to fish heavy kelpy ground(line and rig wise).as posted on catch report i was using pully rigs with them cany links and a rotten bottom,some time the lead stayed on the clip and was a **** pulling through the veg.been told to just use them gemini clips turned upside down and put lead on there.if you dont clip the bait down will it not keep getting caught up in the kelp on way down,would a longer weak link get rid of the lead quicker,and what b/s do people use for there rotton bottoms,ill try using plain leads to see if that makes a difference.using a 525 with 25lb line and a 60lb leader,should i use a bigger b/s leader?.i tie the leader on with a spider hitch but have noticed if the line snaps its at the knott that holds the leader to the spider hitch thinking of trying to tie a bimini and see how that does

hi peter .... a lot of lads just use a simple 3 way swivel rig fishing thick kelp where the hook snood is a lot higher , and a rotten bottom for the lead (weaker line ) after all some marks are a short lob so the weaker line will stand the weight when casting or you can use the rotten bottom clips

At distance is just use normal set up, shocker is 60lb using a slim beauty knot and use bait clip turned upside down and an oval link to the sinker to stop the knot from getting hammered on the rocks and to hook into the bait clip, a 18lb weak link and 25lb main line with a up and over clip down or a pulley rig and a bronze hook which will usually straighten as not as weak as an aberdeen but not as stong as a stainless steel. also if you get hung up with a fish on ant it snaps off the fish stands a chance of getting shot of the hook.

If its as rough as hell, i use 35lb straight through and 30lb weight and hook lengths no clips or swivels just loops and palomar knots for 90% knot strength, waste a time using blood knots these break too easy when taking a hammering in kelp.

i just make rigs with loops and a genie clip upside down for the rotten bottem. some times a shorter hook length is best if its really heavy and i dont bother clipping it down because i'm only over the nutting it.

A dunno where u heard or seen about the blood knots mate but i cannot DISAGREE more...

I use 80lb Sakuma rig line and 60lb shockleader of the same and i use the blood knot with 5 or 6 twists for to tie clips n swivels to me shockleader/rig body, etc, and have never had that problem throughout the 10 years I've fished, even when i was young and course fished the same great knot has never let me down.

What was the palomar knot designed for as a stronger replacement to the blood knot, The double wrap of mono through the hook, swivel or clip eyelet provides a protective cushion for added safety and strength this is a fact which cannot be disputed and when your fishing 35lb straight you want that strength and abrasion resistance

Dont get me wrong i still use blood knots but only on my weak links so i know they will snap

Everyone will have there own personal opinion on what knot is best for a given situation, I use blood knots for attaching hooks for beachwork " nothing else". As for where or seen, I was taught and experience tells me(40 years n more) that the blood knot is no where near as strong as the palomar. I can't really see the point in using a shockleader for lobbing into thick kelp
