  • take care when fishing the rock marks

i fished runswick twice in the past few days,1st session was not very good ended up with 2 whiteys .
2nd session ended up with 3 codling for 7lb 8oz, best just over 4lb .casting very short into the gulleys did the trick ,baits used was mussel, lug and razor.
anyway whilst packing up heard some one shouting for help ,found this fella covered in blood all down his face and coat ,after wiping it away with a towel ,it turned out to be a cut about an inch long on his forehead ,i then helped this lad back to the car park .he had never been here before ,fished in the dark, on his own .a total recipie for danger.
if your reading this sorry i cant remember your name ,but please in future if you or anyone fishes marks like this ,go with someone or tell someone where your fishing .
i know i sound like your mum ,but this could have been a lot worse.
take care and enjoy your fishing lads

    SOUND ADVICE, Ollie !

I know that (for me, anyway), part of the enjoyment gained through fishing is the feeling of freedom and the \"getting away from it all\". However, fishing is much the same as most other outdoor pusuits in the fact that because you are \"out there\" there are inherent dangers.

It makes sense to let somebody know where you\'re going and when you expect to be back. BUT if you change your plans, let that person know so as to avoid any unnecessary worry or emergency call outs.

FISH SAFELY, AND YOU\'LL LIVE TO DO SO AGAIN

Nice on Andy. Sounds like you did a good job there. The guy must have been crazy. Like I was saying to you I wouldn\'t mind fishing it at night, but I would never attempt it on my own.
I always carry a mini first aid kit the rucksack just incase I come across anything like that (helps that I\'m also first aider at work). The other things I always carry are a mobile phone (which doesn\'t work at Runswick) and the backup which is an emergeny whistle. The whistle can be heard for around 3/4 mile which is a lot further than someones voice will carry.

One thing I firmly believe is that you can\'t be too careful.

Anyway, glad it wasn\'t a waste of time me skeining those mussels! Take it the colour was back in the water?

I like the whistle idea, easily tied-up with some string onto a jacket zip. I\'ve got a pretty loud four finger in the gob whistle. But after baiting up, I\'m not keen on stuffing anything in there unless I\'m holding it in a wrapper.

mike thats an excellant idea with a whistle,as mobiles are useless on most cliff marks along this coast. That bloke didnt have a mobile and heaven knows what might have been if hed knocked himself out.!!!
On the fishing point ,those mussels didnt last long !!! and the sea colour was nice and cloudy.did you get my email about the comp that night?

You can\'t be too careful. I slipped and broke my leg on a footpath after fishing at Moelfre in Anglesey in February. I was on my way back to the car and was at most 200 yds from houses and on a footpath. My mobile wouldn\'t work and it took an hour for someone to walk past me on the path. I could see people walking 150yds away but couldn\'t attract their attention. I was lucky \'cos I was warm enough in my floatation suit. I carry a whistle tied to my float suit now to attract attention. It really shook me up, I could have done it where no one would come along or the tide would hve covered me.
I often fish alone for one reason or another (like I\'ve no mates who fish) and I never fish marks at night where I\'ll be alone. Always obvious marks like piers and so on where there\'ll be other anglers. Might not catch as much but I\'ll not catch anything 6 foot under ground or from a hopsitial bed.

Andy, the last email I got from you was the day before we met up (you know, the one asking me if I recieve the previous email..which I didn\'t.LOL).

I\'d seriously think about using the email account you get through your internet supplier. I\'m shocked at how hit and miss Hotmail appears to be. At least then you wouldn\'t be limited to sending attachments under 1mb in size.

There\'s a thought actually..Those emails didn\'t have any attachments did they?

I always make a point of taking a whistle with me whenever I go out fishing. I suppose it stems from me old climbing days.

Just to let you all know (incase you don\'t, already), there is an international distress code - which is.......

DISTRESS CALL = 6 long flashes of a torch OR 6 blasts of a whistle - repeated at 1 minute intervals

REPLY TO DISTRESS CALL = 3 long flashes of a torch OR 3 blasts of a whistle repeated at 1 minute intervals

Also, there\'s the old Morse Code......
                S.O.S. = 3 short, 3 long, 3 short. Pause and repeat.

One note on whistles......don\'t go for the \"perry\" whistle type. That\'s the kind without a pea and sounds a bit like the old police whistle.

                Perry Whistle:

They\'re totally useless for carrying the sound any distance. Get a one with a pea MUCH louder and far more effective.

Just 1 more note on whistles - go for a plastic one (NOT metal). Apart from it lasting longer through not corroding, there\'s no risk of it sticking to your lips in extremely cold weather and resulting in a burn.

I also carry a personal attack alarm which is part of a torch bought from Homebase for a tenner, I can set it off and it keeps wailing long after i\'ve run out of puff for the whistle, it\'s also got a flashing red light for the dark.
