I expect that this has been asked before but what is the law on catching sea trout? The reason I`m asking is because I took my grandson for an all nighter on Amble pier and managed to catch a small sea trout of about 12 ounces which was released unharmed. If it had been bigger would I be allowed to keep it for the pot? I`m sure I heard somewhere that it is illegal to take sea trout. Any info would be much appreciated.

to keep sea trout or salmon caught from the shore you need a migratory fish license.

You need a licence to fish for them up to 6 mile out to sea.

But if the youngun is under 11 they don't need the license.
