  • what is this fish ?

    I went down north shields quayside this morning for the last few hours of the flood. As per I had a cast to wet me line and caught this little fella on me bare hook ( see pic ) not sure what it is but its herring like. I ended up with 3 coalies on bait lol.

    looks like a smelt mate, did it smell of cucmber?

      That is definately a small herring mate, you can tell this by the body shape and distinctive upturned mouth.

      It must av been really hungry to take a bare hook

        cant say that i had a smell of it mate lol but its scales came off really easily if that helps and i did put it back alive.

            Yep, defo what a said, small herring or herring sprat, scales come off real easy on them.

              Well all a can say is that bigger herring will/or possibly take a small sandeel, which a small silver or black hook can look like in the water, mackerel have been caught many a time this way too. That or when you cast oot your rig must have landed right on top of it in the water...

                deffo a herring me and my mate caught loads of them from seaham pier afew weeks ago

                  aye av had mackeral take a bare hook like, ah still cant figure out why it was in there though coz there was a lot of fresh water on the top off sat or how it could see the hook in it
